About Long Melford
Perched upon the River Stour, is Long Melford – one of Suffolk’s finest villages. Long Melford is a charming village to visit with its long Medieval High Street: reputed to be the longest village High Street in England.
A former market town, Long Melford is a thriving village, lined with lots of shops, art galleries, boutiques and traditional country pubs, giving you the opportunity to while away some time. The village is awash with antique shops, giving a nod to the well-known TV series ‘Lovejoy’ to which Long Melford was the backdrop for. Lovejoy aired between 1986 and 1994 and can still be seen on some channels, itwas all about the rogue antique dealer, portrayed by Ian McShane.
Long Melford is situated just 14 miles from the market town of Bury St. Edmunds and 16 miles from Colchester, meaning transport to and from London is especially easy, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Our accommodation in Long Melford provides you with luxuries such as beautiful beamed interiors, tudor brick floors with underfloor heating and open log fires; ideal for cosying up with a loved one in front of the sofa after a walk back from one of the delightful local pubs.
Food and Drink
The village boasts a wealth of great pubs, restaurants and little foodie shops. The Swan serves an excellent Gastro Menu and has some great beers and wines, they will even knock you up a delicious cocktail if you are in that kind of mood!
The Black Lion has an excellent restaurant and a lovely laid back bar with big comfy sofas and views across the Village Green to Melford Hall (National Trust Stately Home) as well as the famous Church. The old-fashioned laid back charm of this place makes it a special place to visit.
Almost next door is Scutchers a high quality restaurant.
The Swan in the high street is one of our big favourites and has a good gastro pub menu.
There are a variety of bistro’s, cafe’s, tea rooms, pubs, Indian restaurants and gastro pubs down the village high street, serving everything from breakfast, lunches, afternoon teas and delicious cakes and dinners, they are definitely worth checking out, maybe after a long walk exploring the countryside!
What To Do
Situated with Long Melford are two stately homes – within 400 yards from Spadgers. Melford Hall, a spectacular medieval building, is cared for by the national trust and definitely is worth a visit. The Hall was devastated by a fire in the 1940s, but was meticulously restored and nurtured back to its glorious state by the family who still live there to this day.
Kentwell Hall is a huge tourist attraction in Suffolk as it is famous for its Tudor re-enactments, so a visit is an absolute must when staying at our accommodation in Long Melford. There are over 250 actors of all ages who re-create the life of the historic house and estate, aiding the transformation into a 16th Century Manor.
