The Experience - Self Catering At Tara (Czech Republic)

Tara is my own magical historic Farmhouse set in a beautiful Beskydy mountain nature reserve. A short hop away from Stansted Airport by Ryanair, Tar is just 50 minutes from Ostrava Airport.

Tara is a wonderful place to take a big extended family group, with lots of character, space and views, even a touch of luxury.

Lonely Planet’s Magazine ‘Traveller’ chose Tara itself as one of ‘Europe’s 30 Ultimate Winter Experiences’.  Traveller Magazine is the Travel Magazine of the Year: See the article here.

Cottage Walk Through

Cottage walk through

Tara is very spacious at 410 square meters of living space, but we prefer to restrict the number of guests to 10-12 adults which easily fits in to the 6 bedrooms and doesn’t include 4 people having an afternoon snooze on top of the wonderful sheep skin covered oven.

The house is ideal for large family groups as it has 6 bedrooms, 3 upstairs but the rest along with all other rooms are on the ground floor, ideal for guests that are less than fully mobile.

You enter the Farmhouse through the front door into a long hallway with benches to change shoes, (shoe warming rack supplied) coat hangers and a washroom with a toilet.

This leads into the main square hallway off which is the large bathroom with a big double sized shower, 2 wash basins a loo, washing machine and a dryer.

The Hallway has a large American type fridge freezer to add to the refrigerating capacity of the kitchen fridge.

Off this hall is also a sweet single bedroom with an antique farmer’s bed and log walls the window overlooks the meadow.

The Hall leads through into a room with a big sofa and TV (300 satellite channels) and a small library of books and DVD’s.

A lovely open wood staircase winds up round the sofa to the first floor 3 bedrooms.

A door off the TV room leads to another downstairs bedroom we call the Princess bedroom because of the pretty 4 poster single Princess bed there.

Leading on from the Princess bedroom is a cosy double bedroom with a king-sized bed, log walls, and windows on 2 sides.

Also off the TV room is a doorway leading onto the 40 foot balcony which have bee opened up most of the year to afford beautiful views across the forest valley all the way to Slovakia.

The Balcony has tables and chairs for guests to enjoy eating in the fresh air or watching the wildlife from, or simply relaxing on and taking in the amazing views into the far distance with not a house or road in sight.

Also off the TV room is the very large main room which is the heart of the house. It has two big tables, benches and chairs enough for 12 people, there is a big comfy sofa and the wonderful Farmer-oven which has a staircase up to its top where there is room for 4 people to lie down and get slowly cooked, children love it.

The main room leads round to a very well equipped kitchen complete with two electric hobs an electric oven, a beautiful farmer’s wood-fired hotplate and oven, a dishwasher, fridge, microwave and double sink.

The kitchen also has one end bench seated and a pretty farmer’s table for a few people to have breakfast or keep the cook company.

Upstairs there is a hallway with a sunny area with a table and chairs and shelves of books to read.

Off this hallway is the big four poster bedroom with two sofa’s one of which can be made up in case kids want to sleep in Mum’s room.

Also off the hallway is small double bedroom and the very big family bedroom.

The family bedroom has a king-sized bed and two antique single farmer’s beds, there is also a permanent large wooden cot.

Sleeping Capacity:

First Floor

sleeping 4:        A Big family bedroom with a King-sized double bed and 2 single beds

sleeping 2:        A small bedroom with a double bed

Sleeping 2 (4):  A large Bedroom with a big four poster bed and a sofa bed good for 2 children

Ground Floor

Sleeping 2:         A double bedroom

Sleeping 1:         A single bedroom (leading through to the double bedroom)

Sleeping 1          A single bedroom

Total 12 guests maximum but 2 small children could sleep in the four poster sofa bed rather than in their own bedrooms.

The house stands in its own meadows of about 20 acres, all around is wonderful forest and the views from the veranda look straight across the valley and left and right for about 12 miles – there is no sign of a house, light, telegraph pole, road or civilisation at all – it is a wonderful forest nature reserve

But… not completely cut off!

The house was the focus of a tiny community of mountain farmers and there are about 8 houses, mostly ancient within 1.5 kilometres nestled into meadows in the forest.

The closest is behind Tara by a few hundred yards and where our Czech friends live

Next door is our large Barn which is also used sometimes by my family, so if you need help there is always a friendly face to look after you.

Garden

The house stands in its own meadows of about 20 acres, all around is wonderful forest and the views from the veranda look straight across the valley and left and right for about 12 miles – there is no sign of a house, light, telegraph pole, road or civilisation at all – it is a wonderful forest nature reserve where only those people who actually live in it can travel around by car, everyone else has to walk, so very few cars and no tourist feel to the place.
We have an orchard and meadow below Tara and 2 ponds to attract wildlife.
We have made a traditional wood store shed where you can take fuel for the Farmer’s Oven or your BBQ, or just sit outside on the bench and take in the lovely views.
We also have a purpose made BBQ Barn which is a bit hit with our guests, the Barn has a built in BBQ which tables and benches, we have lit it up with fairy lights and the views from the Barn are just gorgeous.
We have placed benches and tables near the ponds and under Tara so people can easily find a quite spot to enjoy the peace and quiet of this lovely location.
Wild animals have free access to our meadows, so at dawn and sunset you will see deer, in Spring maybe a dozen hares.
Here is a list of the wonderful birds and animals that you can see at Tara link
We are fine with guests bringing well behaved doggies but they should not chase the deer, if there are deer in sight.

Outside

You are in one of the last Primeval Forests in Europe, it stretches over 3 countries and in total is an amazing 12,000 square miles.
The forest is criss-crossed in our area by forest logging roads which while not being open to traffic except for access to the homes of the people who live in the forest (you have a permit for access to Tara), these roads are great for exploring by bicycle.
You can hire bikes at the local ski resort; Bila, which is just 3 km away.
There are footpaths and I provide my own map showing guests how to get to the top of the mountain where there is a hotel restaurant/café and a High-Alm road leading you along the top of the Mountain past the lovely wooden church from where there are amazing views over forest all the way to the High Tara Mountains in Poland.
I you love nature, bird watching, animal watching, fresh air, beautiful views, amazing black night skies, memorable BBQ’s,  walking, cycling, and great cheap food then this is a place to thrill you.

Green Credentials

We carefully renovated Tara in the original style for 10 years using only traditional materials and methods, our builders were a specialist company mainly working with restoring Churches.

This Farm-house is made entirely of wood resting on 4 massive arched stone cellars.

You will see traditional moss insulation in between the logs and beautiful ‘handmade’ wooden roof shingles (tiles).

All building materials including all wood and wood roofing shingles were locally sourced, with very few transport miles.

Specialist artisan workers skills were employed in crafting the shingles and laying them 3 layers deep as a curved coat over the house, Stone masons worked on the ancient corbelled cellars and retaining walls to fully restore them.

Water diviners were used to locate the best purest water locations for our water bore.

Of course we have taken advantage of modern technology to make Tara even more warm like the infra-red ceiling heaters, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and constant hot water, but everything has been done to make sure that Tara lasts for another 300 hundred years.

We source our own water from a spring which overflows into our ponds and even in the long hot summers which we now have and where other cottages on the mountain have quickly run dry, our spring is coming from so deep down that we have never run dry.

Just in case we have also driven a bore hole down 100 meters as a back-up for future years of climate change.

We operate our own waste water system which is a large reed bed system, approved and encouraged by the Nature Reserve authorities in this Water Protection Area.

We keep bee hives in our meadows to encourage the local flora.

If electricity were to fail we have wood fired cooking stoves and heating which anyway is far more capable and efficient if we have a Winter Freeze where temperatures can dive down to minus twenty. When that happens Tara really comes into its own when the log stoves are fired up and all is very cosy.

We are happy that the Nature Reserve authorities visit our meadows twice a year to read the state of the flora in them – they use this information as the bench mark for other meadow owners to try to get to.

Local Area

Local Area

Tara is situated in the middle of the famous Beskydy Mountain Nature Reserve in the Czech Republic close to the massive Sance reservoir lake and with views of the Slovak and Polish borders in the NE corner of the Czech Republic.

This is an area which is visually beautiful with a rich history and many interesting places to visit or just experience nature in its grandeur right on your doorstep.
It is a wonderful place to visit in Winter when the snow covers everything but we think it is even better in the summer when the forest comes to life and it is easier to explore this lovely area.
The nearest village is Bila (3 km away) which has ski-lifts to take skiers in Winter or Cyclists in summer to the top of the mountain.

You can hire bikes for adults and scooters for children at the ski lift and go on a 6 km easy downhill run on the tiny forest lane – or follow a cross country course or explore the marked trails and footpaths for as many miles or days you want to.

At Bila there is also a lovely kids play area with climbing, sliding, trampolining and forest adventure park with zip wires (and a good cafe to sit and watch them 🙂

Roznov is just a 25 minute drive away past 3 little villages and it is here that the famous Skansem Museum village is – this is a special place to visit and the many houses in the village square or up in the farming community are brought to life not only with their perfect historic interiors but re-enactors who will explain to you have life was lived in these houses way back in history.

Skansem also has 4 working water and wind mills you can visit and there are frequent fairs, craft markets and traditional festivals held there where the local young men and women try to outdo one another in traditional dress and dance.

Kids and Ninja’s of all ages love to go to Tazania and Trojanovice – it has an amazing series of tree top assault courses and you can take the ski lift up from here to Pustevni (another big favourite) and cycle or scoot all the way back – which is a long way !

I have put a lot of photos and information about all the wonderful places to visit, the forest, Historic Villages, cycling, horse riding, skiing, children’s activities and masses more on my ‘Discover Stare Hamry’ pages. Please have a look at them here and more information can be found on this link

This is an ideal place for large family groups to get together and have a special time.

What the Guests Say...

    • Saturday, 24th February 2024, Rebecca:
    • We had a lovely time in Tara during February half term. It is situated in a beautiful woodland and I think would be great for a summer break as well as a winter one. We didn’t have much snow, but the kids managed a little bit of skiing on the local piste. We walked in the local hills, ate delicious food and enjoyed the rural surroundings – including the greater spotted woodpecker – a frequent visitor to the bird table! Kids loved snoozing on top of the “bread oven”.
    • Saturday, 30th of October, 2021, Sonja, Josh, Anita & Michael
Thank you Mark for the warm welcome you gave us and all the tips and advice before and during our stay. We found Tara to be the perfect balance between traditional and modern that makes it so unique. You and Zuzi have created a house that feels like home instantly with very comfortable beds, efficient heating and and well equipped throughout.. We were blessed with a week of bright warm sunny days and enjoyed long walks on most days. The information books and leaflets were most useful: A must in our opinion is to visit the Museum Village at Roznov. There is still much to explore in the area and I am sure we will visit again in the future. it is hard to describe the peace and tranquillity Tara offers, but I am sure all visitors have that experience.
Also Marta gave us the most beautiful and professional Massage; we highly recommend. Many thanks again.
    • Saturday, 24th of August, 2019, Vicki:
This is our second visit in 4 months – that’s testament to how much we love this beautiful home in idyllic surroundings. This time, we cam as our original family of 4 plus 6 other family members. Everyone has been catered for wonderfully – from our two year old to my father who has dementia. This really is a place to treasure and we’ll take away memories really dear to us. Thank you
    • Saturday, 17th of August, 2019, Mark & Christine:
A magical house in lovely surroundings that will live long in our memories. The viewing platform at Pustevny is well worth a look and the scooters down from the top of the chair lift are great fun. Thanks to Mark & Zuzi for all the information and help and for providing everything possible in the accommodation.
    • Saturday, 3rd of August, 2019, Caroline:
We had a fabulous time at Tara, really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the mountains, although lots to do in the area too. Will miss the view ! Tara is a home from home, so comfortable and everything we needed. Thank you.
    • Saturday, 4th of May, 2019, The Kennedy Family:
This place is simply stunning. It deserves the utmost respect, and so too do Mark and his family for the level of care and detail. We have been blessed to be here and have found ourselves having to be dragged away almost ! (the good news is, we’ll be back very soon) I wish I had more time to write but for now thank you. This holiday has meant the World to us. With love from the Kennedy family
    • Saturday, 23rd of February, 2019, Nick & Rachel:
From our dramatic 1am arrival (being dug out of the snow by Jenda and Marian, the neighbouring policeman!) to the ongoing advice from Mark in the UK, this has been such an adventure! The hospitality of Mark, Zuzi, Kverta and Jenda has been amazing. Tara itself is a magical place to stay. We could have spent the whole week happily playing and resting here. But five days of skiing down at Bila and all three of our girls can now ski! Thank you all. We will be back (with a 4WD vehicle next time!!!).
    • Saturday, 23rd of February, 2019, Jessie & Eden:
I really love this house and I want to come back soon. Jessie. I so much enjoy being here in the Tara house because the warm oven heats you up. It is so cool because the bedrooms are built a long time ago and it is like a house inside a house with two roofs. I love the Czech Republic because of it’s wonderful snow and it is so lovely that we are in a mountain. Thank you for letting us come to your house and thank you for giving us food for breakfast. I Eden (the youngest child) particularly loved the yoghurts. Eden
    • Saturday, 23rd of February, 2019, Bethia:
I really love this house especially because it is so warm in the snow. It is so much fun to play on the sledges and one night we had a barbecue outside with the fairy lights which was amazing. We loved to look at the stars and to go skiing in the morning. I really think that this is one of my favourite holidays even though it is not ended and I really want to come again, maybe with more friends as it is so big.
    • Saturday, 29th of December, 2018, Tina, Endre & Veronica:
Thank you for the very warm welcome we received on our arrival at Tara. We have had the most wonderful Christmas holiday. Tara is truly the most gorgeous idyllic house. We are an anglo Norwegian family and we joined together at Tara. We found Tara to be a home from home, everything about it felt cosy, brilliant, comfy beds, we just loved all it had to offer. We found it so homely that we did think about squatting! -:) It just remains for me and mine to say a big thank you and we will be back. Wishing you all and yours a Happy New Year with a warm thank you. All best wishes
    • Friday, 17th of August, 2018, Berndt & Family:

    • Saturday, 11th of August, 2018, Martin:
We had an amazing time, we wish we could stay here longer. Lovely house, lots of room and activities minutes away! Loved it here and would definitely come again. We loved how you designed the house

It was a very relaxing holiday with lots of fun and sun. Tara is very very charming. A beautiful place with lots of nature (birds, red deer and other). Mark & Zuzi were very helpful and friendly.

Everything was way above our expectations. We can’t thank you enough -:)
    • Tuesday, 4th of July, 2017, Ivana’s daughter:
Tara is very nice and this is my second time here and I still remember my first time. I love the garden
    • Saturday, 29th of October, 2016, Janine:
We had a wonderful time staying at Tara and the weather held up for us as well. It was a great opportunity for family bonding and playing games. Tara has a beautiful view out into the mountains and Mark was very helpful giving us plenty of tips, leaflets and maps. One tip we picked up was try not to drive in the dark as it is very easy to get lost as we found out on arrival. The sunsets here are amazing providing there is no fog – great photo opportunity! There;s no worry about being cold in the house as the heating is amazing especially if you sit in the chill out zone – very warm and cosy. The quiet and calm in the forest is magical. Tara is an amazing retreat to refresh mind and body, away from hectic every day life. We were made to feel so welcome. Thank you, we had an awesome week.
    • Sunday, 28th of August, 2016, Michelle:
We had such a lovely time at Tara. We had a few overcast and rainy days and went to Dino Park. We went to Depo Orlova restaurant afterwards and the children loved the train that delivers your drinks. Areal Zaradilha was another good restaurant with playground and mini golf. We really enjoyed Hostel Harcova in Frydlant nad Ostravici which had an indoor play are for children and lovely food. We enjoyed the summer playground in Bila, and spent two days in the Aquapark Olensna, when the sun was shining. We really enjoyed the Czech Republic and look forward to coming back!
    • Saturday, 20th of August, 2016, Bill & Karen:
Thank you for a very warm welcome to your beautiful home in the mountains. Our family have loved exploring the area and there has been so much to do and see during our two weeks we didn’t fit all in – maybe because we loved to spent time relaxing in the peaceful surrounding of Tara. The Beskydy mountains are a hidden gem and so easy to get too – even for us Northumbrians. If you are thinking about coming, think no more and just go an explore. Thank you Mark and Zuzi for making such a relaxing wooden home – authentic but with all modern appliances and fully stocked kitchen – Tara is a very special place.
    • Saturday, 9th of July, 2016, Faye:
What a beautiful house!! Love the surroundings and all the wildlife. Rooms are very nice and it’s easy to sleep -:) Early mornings on the balcony are beautiful and so tranquil listening to all the animals move about in the long grass. Would definitely recommend it to everyone.
    • Saturday, 16th of April, 2016, Daniel:
Use the barbecue – if only for sitting around it on a cool night! We saw a wolf too, small, don’t worry! Beautifully peaceful here, blissful to sleep in complete darkness and silence – walks around the cottage are great. Wonderful place to reset and recharge!
    • Saturday, 26th of March, 2016, Sarah & John:
What an amazingly magical time we’ve had at Tara and in the forest. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to experience this most beautiful and special part of the planet, in such a natural way. Tara is so well equipped . We came for my 50th birthday and I can’t think of anywhere I would rather have been. I feel very blessed, thank you Sarah xx
    • Saturday, 27th of February, 2016, Stephen:
If you want to clear your head, reload your battery, forget your ‘normal’ needs of television, computer and mobile phones, come to Tara. The house and surroundings are so relaxing. And it is so quiet! Seldom a noise of passing cars or other incidental noise. For us Dutchmen that is quite rare. We had four seasons in one week from heavy snow, to heavy rain, to sun and temperatures over 10 degrees, back to snow again. But no matter what kind of weather, there was always the shelter of Tara. We really love that farmers oven! So nice to lay on top of it and it provides a nice warmth in the house. Now we have to leave sadly, put the snow chains on, because the way down is still icy and return home, back to daily life. We will always remember this week and think back with warm feelings! Thanks Mark & Zuzi, thanks Tara!
    • Sunday, 3rd of January, 2016, Rainer:
Wir erlebten in diesem auffallend geschmackvoll eingerichteten Haus Tage der Ruhe, der Treue und der Erholung zum Jahreswechsel 2016
    • Friday, 1st of January, 2016, Anja & Thomas:

As a rural Canadian, I am always on the look out for a country cottage that is not smack dab next to other houses. Tara has satisfied my yearning to get away from it all. I truly hope to return spring, summer, winter and fall! What a tremendous job you have done. Colleen (Canada)

    • Saturday, 28th of December, 2013, Mike:
Vielen Dank fur den herzlichen Empfang der Familie! Wir verbrachten hier eine geniutliche, ereignisreiche Weiknachtszeit und konnen dieses wunderschone, gesdimackvoll eingerichtete Berghans jederzeit weiterempfehlen.

Tara is a very special house in a very special setting. We have had a fantastic week here. From wonderful welcome (and food) provided by Kveta to the atmospheric evenings experienced in the BBQ barn. Everything has conspired to make this a holiday to remember. Bird watching from the balcony was good.

Tara is a magical place. Our family two weeks stay, has been absolutely wonderful. Beautifully renovated, this old house has all the comforts and necessities that we all require in modern life. We have really enjoyed several nature walks, cycling and finding little streams for hot days. The walk to Lysa Hora and Charbulak is highly recommended. You should try to have BBQ as much as you can and sit there with the glow of the fire and a glass of wine. I am a keen cook and after staying in one of your lovely cottages in Suffolk I knew your kitchen would be equipped nicely. Thank you for thinking of all the details and little things to provide us with such a comfortable stay at Tara.

Just wanted to tell you that we had a gorgeous time at Tara. It is a magical place and the kids are ski masters now! Thank you so much. We will definitely come back next year! Can we make a reservation already? 🙂

Just back from Tara I want to stress that this is probably the most charming cottage I’ve ever spend a night in! The support by Kverta and the locals with the snow was great – when the horse arrived and drew our things uphill we felt like pushed back into a slavonic fairy tale. Congratulations: Tara is truly a pearl. We are busily making plans when to return.

Living in Tara, feels like being in the middle of the world. Heart can come to rest and the mind can open. See you next time Tara !!

Thank you for having a chnace to stay in this truly amazing house. Loved the Beskedy Mountains. The cottage is truly beautiful, with a great fireplace and enough space for the kids to roam around.

Tara is warm and incredibly relaxing. It is a perfect place for a large family with children. The decor and style of Tara is that of a traditional Vellasska ( old fashioned/traditional ) dwelling. We heartily recommend it !

The view from the veranda really was so stunning that it quite often didn’t seem real and just didn’t get ‘old’. The barbecue was so pleasant we rarely cooked inside, and my grandmother who has never liked barbecues has now requested a barbecue for her birthday! A lovely benefit is being able to have fresh (and I mean so fresh it was still sometimes warm) goats milk delivered daily by the goat herder you might have seen wondering over the meadows earlier. Our first family holiday in 22 years and it was absolutely fabulous.

Good family time together, enjoyed evening meal times. House very comfortable and loved the top of the bread oven – very cosy for lazy sleeps in the afternoon.

Gorgeous house, amazing views, lovely walks. Kept 3 generations of a family from 2-60 years old in comfort and entertainment. Would recommend to others and would consider visiting your other properties.

We had such a fantastic time in your incredible house, Tara. We loved it. Just wanted to say thankyou for your directions for driving from Brno airport. They were absolutely brilliant. So clear to understand. Hope you found everything in good order after we left. We did masses of walking whilst there and the children did a lot of running up and down your balcony which was my favourite bit of your house. What an amazing view! Thank you too for the shopping and meal cooking…. it was extremely helpful.

Delightful, peaceful and tranquil house. We’ve had a fantastic week here in Tara. The Beskedys provide a beautiful setting for a superb house, full of all the mod cons.

Stunning! I don’t think I have ever visited a place so peaceful. Endless starry nights next to the warm glow from the fire and BBQ – inspired idea. The wildlife is fantastic, we even managed to see a black Stork and its incredible wingspan. What outstanding beauty there is all around, and such luxurious accomodation! What an idyll! Would love to return and see the place in the winter months.

Tara is just a lovely house! All mod cons, but with the feel of a peaceful place where people have lived for hundreds of years. The goulash waiting for us on Saturday was delicious, and just what we needed after a long day’s travelling.

Nochmals vielen Dank fr Alles Viele Gre
