The Experience
On the lovely Mersea Island, Bromans Barn is situated beside a very special Nature Reserve which rolls down to the sea.
It is a romantic self-catering cottage for two with an elegant mix of ecological build and sympathetic historical renovation. The farmhouse dates back to 1320 and was once one of the major farmhouses on the island.
This is a very creative conversion of an old barn; impressively spacious but also very cosy and relaxing. The sun streams in through the many windows and in the evenings there is a lovely cosy wood burning stove to enjoy.
The owners welcome guests to this lovely cottage with a bottle of wine and biscuits to help them unwind.

At the end of the pretty courtyard of the historic Bromans farmhouse sits the lovely Bromans Barn, in front of it is a shingle patio partially shaded by the branches of an old tree offering shade to guests enjoying an evening drink and of course the odd free range chicken dozing in the suntrap.
You enter this old barn through double French Doors straight into the main room with its traditional Suffolk White brick floor extending throughout the cottage.
The high arched ceiling and ancient beams give this place an airy feeling and the cleverly designed lowered ceiling areas draw you into the cosy sitting area with the big Wood burning stove and comfy sofa and the kitchen area.
Bromans Barn is all on one floor and has a very large wet room, it is ideal for guests who have limited mobility. Please call us to discuss this further.
There is a very well equipped kitchen and dining table at the far end of the room and a wide curtained entrance to the bedroom at the other end.
As with all the cottages, everything is supplied to provide you with a stress free and enjoyable stay, including bed linen, towels, basic supplies, maps for you to explore the area and you can even bring your own dinghy, windsurf or kayak!
Unfortunately, bicycles are not available at this cottage.
The owners welcome guests to this lovely cottage with a bottle of wine and biscuits.
Well behaved dogs are always welcome.
Sorry but babies and children are not accepted.
The Garden
There are two patio areas immediately outside the cottage with tables, chairs and deckchairs for guests to sit and enjoy this historic farm.

This beautiful Essex holiday cottage is right beside Mersea Islands famous Cudmore Nature Reserve. Bromans will suit guests who enjoy a good walk, the seaside, and some really good and unusual seafood restaurants.
This is an excellent place to enjoy the rich wildlife that Mersea Island offers, from the comfort of a romantic barn conversion on a lovely old farm; it is just a short stroll through the adjacent Nature Reserve to the beach.
As this is a pet friendly cottage you can really exhaust a dog with walks straight from the cottage.
There are special walks laid out where you can enjoy the beauty of the salt marshes where seals bask. You become very aware of the ever changing relationship between sky, marsh and sea as you wander along these coastal paths.
Bromans Barn has a special appeal – not only is it next to this famous country park but also just minutes’ walk from the sea and the Pyefleet Estuary.
Green Credentials
Bromans Barn is very eco-friendly – it has sheep’s wool insulation and a ground heat source pump supplying hot water and under floor heating – it also has organic vegetable and herb beds for guests to freely use.
The Barn has been renovated using many reclaimed and locally sourced materials, the work carried out by expert craftsmen specialising in Historic renovation and ecological builds.
There is a wealth of wildlife and flora that has resulted in the Nature Reserve being created to protect it and with the sea shore just a few hundred meters away there are some special walks along the coast to enjoy seeing seals and picking up fossils.
In the fields around the farm you may catch sight of the hares and badgers and if you’re lucky, red squirrels, along with some wonderful birdlife.
East Mersea is a recognised stopping point for many of the migratory birds coming to the UK over the different seasons. Read more about Mersea Island…
Local Area
Mersea Island is well known for its oyster beds and wonderful harbour side restaurants like ‘The Company Shed’. If you decide to check this one out remember to get there at least an hour or two before lunch time – you’ll see why when you get issued with a ticket in the big queue – and it really is just a shed, and yes you have to bring your own bread and wine ! But all the famous chefs have been there.
Take a ferry trip from Cudmore Park landing stage to Brightlingsea across the estuary, which is rather fun – great fish and chips there too.

Our first trip to Mersea and we loved it!! Spoilt rotten with fantastic weather, so we’ve done lots of walking and sampled as much fresh seafood as we could. The only time we left the island was to catch the foot ferry to Brightlingsea, which was great fun. Food at Mehala’s and the West Mersea Oyster Bar was delicious. Thanks to Ru & Jo for everything! This barn is a real hidden gem!

What a beautiful spot to discover! The barn has been an all in one perfect home. We would have loved to have seen the little and barn owls, but no luck this time – we will have to come back. We did however, see a badger and lots of fantastic birds from the hide in the park. It was also lovely to go inside a pill box. Lovely mix of outdoor and historical adventures. Thanks for having us.

It took us a couple of days to acclimatise but we have now fallen in love with Mersea and are planning our next visit. Big skies and wonderful sunsets. Great walks through Cudmore grove and down to Pyefleet Creek. We’ve enjoyed the birdwatching, especially the owl. Try Mehalahs early in your holiday – you will definitely go back – the grilled oysters and seafood pancakes are amazing as is the seafood platter. x

We wanted a relaxing break with lovely walks for the dogs, that box was certainly ticked. Bromans Barn is adorable, cosy and tranquil. The breakfast package is a lovely touch and the Bread was superb. Our Huskies Nanook and Kane have loved the beach walks and we have had some lovely chats with local dog walkers. We recommend the walk to West Mersea and back along the beach as a warm up for the walk around the island, anti-clockwise, stopping for lunch at the Coast Inn. Take away seafood from the Oyster Bar was excellent. Going home having had a lovely time with one tired dog. Nice evenings in a relaxing cottage. Thanks.

Although we have the moors on our doorstep it was lovely to explore the Essex countryside and estuaries. Dedham to Flatford Mill was beautiful – buttercup meadows everywhere. A walk around Brightlingsea sea walls was also invigorating, not too much for our dogs little legs. Thank you for the lovely welcome pack. A beautiful cottage and barn.

This was the perfect short break we needed after our wedding. The barn is very welcoming, cosy and homely and we felt at ease and at home straight away. It was great to be so close to the coast and just be able to pop out for a walk. The warm welcome and local knowledge were much appreciated!

Fantastic barn with peaceful countryside surrounding but only 5 minutes walk to the beach. Loads of walks and great seafood on your doorstep. Ru was great when we arrived and very helpful with ideas to meet our needs.

This is my first visit to Essex and I’m so glad we chose Mersea Island. A very interesting island with lovely people. In particular we’ve enjoyed the little boat trip around the West Mersea coast. The coast road is a lively and interesting walk especially at a very high tide! Mehalah’s is delightful.

Outside wind, rain, sleet and freezing temperatures, but inside the barn we were warm and cosy. We’ve enjoyed our stay – the fresh eggs, homemade bread and fruit basket, were very welcome. We enjoyed our walks though they were rather bracing! We hope to come back when the weathers a bit warmer. We would/will definitely recommend.

Just a couple of days away from the stress of work, but we walked the island and loved it all! Mersea Island has been a great discovery. The Art Cafe was great for a cup of tea and a cake. The Oyster bar lives up to it’s reputation – no pretentions, good local food and great service. The barn is really cosy and we loved the brilliant woodburner! Thanks Jo and Ru for your welcome and for a really lovely weekend.
A lovely little barn with all the home comforts you could need. So peaceful and comfortable (especially the ‘marshmallow’ bed!! Brill for lie ins!) We squeezed the very last sunshine out of the year and enjoyed a round the island walk – would recommend, or if not, the entire 13ish miles from here out to the Strood and back – very dog friendly. We recommend a drive to Dedham, very quaint and pretty with with a great pub (Sun Inn), fab food and dogs allowed in front bar.
What else can we say that hasn’t already been said. It’s been the most beautiful place to recharge and relax. Such a beautiful barn with the little touches that make you feel welcome. Thank you for all the info given. Highly recommend Mahalas and The Oyster Bar – the best fish and chips!! We look forward to returning again soon, it’s been just perfect!

The Oyster Bar on the front – fantastic – oysters delicious, would highly recommend Mehalahs – fabulous. The barn is cosy, quiet, the chickens lovely, they come up to the back door if you call them. The beach is 5 mins walk away – this was a much needed break – and we will be back! Thanks again!

Wow!! Thank you, Bromans Barn is a great find! We have loved the walks, we saw a seal today and also spotted fly catchers from the local hide. Jo & Ru are perfect hosts and this cottage is ideal for a little holiday away from frenetic London. It’s so silent and peaceful here. We love the chickens, horses and Barn owls. It’s a haven!! A fabulous few days in a wonderful place. Everything was beautifully comfortable and Ru & Jo couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. Mersea Island is a real little gem and I can’t believe we’ve never been before, despite both growing up in Essex! On the recommendation of Jo, we did the walk around the island – fabulous, with a well deserved feast in the Oyster Bar half way round! Plus we went on a great cycle around the outskirts of Colchester – a wonderful celebration for our 2nd wedding anniversary.
A lovely place, really peaceful and in a great location, didn’t want to go home! Loved the chickens! We have cycled, walked and taken the ferry, which was a real adventure. Excellent accommodation – thank you for a great hols.

This break for us has been romantic, exciting and extremely good fun from the start. The barn is fantastic, has everything you could imagine and more. Jo and Ru have been very welcoming from the start of our stay, nothing has been too much bother. Whilst here we have made the most of our break by canoeing along the River Stour, cycling around the island (and running), walking and sea kayaking. We have loved our stay and hopefully will return next year. Amazing place.

A lovely warm welcome on arrival. We enjoyed our walk along the sea, although will have to brush up on ‘right of way’ across the fields – a very nice landowner put us back on the right path! The Dog and Pheasant was a lovely friendly pub with a nice beer garden, where you can watch the world go by. Maria’s Tea Rooms was also a nice place to go, and you must meet Max the labrador – again very friendly people. Just a final thank you to Jo and Ru, who made us feel very welcome.

What a lovely surprise Mersea Island has been. Fantastic walking. Walk along the coast to West Mersea and then back via the inland footpaths – make a day of it! Our particular favourite was The Coast INN � amazing fresh fish! On a random drive in West Mersea we found a selection of beach lined with brightly coloured beach huts� absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful barn ! Cosy, warm and perfect for beach walks. The welcoming package of food made us feel at home straight away. Cream teas at the local vineyard and local seafood at the Oyster Bar were truly memorable. A brilliant way to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary. Many thanks.

Harry loved his first visit to the beach and I braved my first oysters at the Oysters at the Oyster Bar. Very cosy and comfortable cottage plus great hospitality. Would really recommend for nature lovers and peace and quiet. Sorry to be leaving so soon.
Beautiful accommodation and perfect for 2 people. Wonderful location right on the doorstep of Cudmore Grove Nature Reserve, so can walk form the cottage. Great for birders, walkers and lovers of the best sea food !�
A thoughtfully equipped cottage in a beautiful setting. Helpful and friendly hosts and not intrusive. The downside ? Not enough time to do all the wonderful walks or eat at the terrific restaurants. We�re preparing for our return already.
We have had a wonderful stay. The Barn is so lovely and welcoming. We stayed Oct 2013 and I just wanted to say that this was our first time booking a cottage online and it was fantastic! We loved Broman’s Barn and Ru made us feel very welcome. We took our 2 dogs and it could not have been more perfect for them with a short to the coast and lots of different areas to explore! We will definitely be back!!

Our friends scoffed when we said we were going on holiday to Essex, but we knew better! Beautiful barn, beautiful location and beautiful weather. We had a wonderful week exploring this lovely island, revisiting childhood haunts, spotting badgers, muntjac deer and ostriches! Eating delicious local fish and seafood and drinking the local beer and wine. Wish it was all closer to Manchester, but we’ll be back.

‘Lovely, relaxing getaway’
Beautiful cottage- perfect location within walking distance to a nature reserve that leads down to a lovely beach. Perfect for couples and dogs. There were fresh flowers awaiting our arrival, fresh milk. bread, butter, eggs, fruit and bacon….absolutely perfect. Ru was lovely and stopped by to welcome us and give us some tips on places to visit and walks to take. There are some lovely places to visit. The Coast Inn ( restaurant ) in West Mersea was fab. We had a lovely chilled out week and will definitely recommend to friends and family
Jo and Ru have been perfect hosts (especially as the have only just moved it themselves!) and made our break a real �home from home� with a high level of care. As soon as we walked into The Barn � the welcoming sound of Classical music, 2 vases of daffodils and a little basket of Easter eggs. These little touches are so important and much appreciated. This is the perfect get away from it all, but NOT cut off! Shops within driving distance, superb walks from the farm.

We have stayed in a lot of self-catering properties and really appreciated those extra special touches of free bike use and the welcome breakfast basket. The personal welcome from Martin was lovely and we’re only sorry that we could only stay for 2 nights in such a beautiful area.

A thoroughly enjoyable week with good weather, a fantastic host in Martin who saw to our every need in the absence of Ruth. The cottage is everything we expected having enjoyed a week in Cobblers Cottage last Spring. The overall attention to detail leaves nothing to chance and we will use Grove Cottages again – may even be back here next year.

Fantastic bird-life and spent a lot of time with doors open, listening to them sing. Cudmore park literally two minutes from barn, which I walked in everyday with pooches. Lovely beach close by-good for shell collecting – beautiful in the evening if you can avoid the flies!!

A wonderful and tranquil retreat-absolute peace and quiet with only the odd pheasant sound. Mersea island is a real treasure!

We found a gem when we picked Bromans Barn – cosy yet spacious – exceeded our expectations – beautiful location on the farm with horses and heron for neighbours. WE enjoyed our daily walk through the country park to the beach, lunch at the Company Shed, day in Colchester town and evenings with the log burner. Perfect

Super Cottage in very nice surroundings. Very nice owners. Interior of Bromans Barn is very much to our country/rural taste and we are very much looking forward to our return visit! First class area if you are a dog owner, with super walks.

Ruth & Martin have worked very hard to develop their barn into a welcoming and comfortable holiday home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The barn was a peaceful, tucked-away retreat for us and the dog. Loved the walks straight from the door through the country park and coastal path. We appreciated the pretty sitting area, complete with sun loungers – perfect for a good book and glass of wine!
