Remember the Lovejoy TV series?

Our pick of the holiday cottages in Essex has to be the Lovejoy Studio. Not only is this cottage in a beautiful, rural location but it also has a great history about it.

The Lovejoy Studio is where scenes from the popular TV series 'Lovejoy' were filmed in this lovely converted coach house and the grounds of Belchamp Hall where it stands.

The Experience

VisitEngland Gold Awarded and 4 Star

plus Awards for Cyclists and Walkers Welcome

Lovejoys Studio sits in the grounds of the wonderful Belchamp Hall famous for its setting in the TV Series ‘Lovejoys’.

Whether you are an avid fan of this long running TV series or not, this cottage which was once the Studio for Lovejoys, is still a really beautiful and luxurious place to stay, surrounded by lovely countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border. It is just 90 minutes from London.

Lovejoys is a romantic cottage, perfect to escape to from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; a place to unwind, relax and enjoy some tranquillity, luxury… and maybe a game of tennis.

This cottage accepts dogs.

Cottage Walk Through

This is a 5 star GOLD awarded cottage. Belchamp Hall and The Lovejoy Studio is right in the middle of the countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border where the filming took place and you can cycle through the pretty lanes and eat lunch in the pubs that featured in the series.

You step into the cottage through a large glass door, painted in 'Belchamp Green' and enter a large, airy room that has the light of an artist's studio. In fact it was at one time the owners wife's studio  - Alice Scrutton  who is known for her large, sweeping seascapes and whose work features throughout this lovely holiday home.

The room is open plan with a high ceiling and old beams that give it a lovely atmosphere. It's also very bright and airy due to the large windows on both sides of the room.

Contemporary furniture sits happily in this studio space that used to be an old coach house, with its white lime-washed wood panelled wall and bleached beams.

This large open plan room, contains a kitchen area with everything you need to cook up a feast, an elegant table to enjoy meals and even entertain friends as it seats up to eight.

The room is separated by the large leather sofas which encircle the cosy wood-burning stove

On one side of the room there are views to the historic walled garden and tennis courts, and on the other side, you look out onto trees and a glimpse of Belchamp Hall.

There is a bookcase full of interesting books on art and travel and a TV with a selection of DVDs, including a boxset of the entire Lovejoy TV series!

A door leading off this room takes you upstairs to a landing with 2 bedrooms and the bathroom leading off it.

The master bedroom is large with a luxurious, super-king sized bed and plenty of storage space for clothes.

The second bedroom has an antique 'small double' Sleigh Bed which maybe a bit tight for larger people, at just 4 foot wide and 6 foot 1 inch long. This bedroom has a nook for hanging your clothing, a chest of drawers and bedside table.

There is a luxurious bathroom next to the bedrooms with a huge bath, two wash basins, toilet and a spacious separate walk-in shower.

Unfortunately the owners cannot accept children in this cottage just babes in arms and adults over 18 years old.

There is a separate utility room, shared by both cottages, which has washing machines, a clothes dryer and it's where the tennis racquets are kept.

The Lovejoy Connection

Remember the popular BBC series ‘Lovejoys’ starring Ian McShane, which ran from 1986-94 and is now re-running on some Freeview channels? It was all about the 'lovable rogue' and antiques dealer called Lovejoy.

Well, Belchamp Hall was a regular feature as the home of Lovejoy's love interest Lady Jane, and was known in the series as Felsham Hall.

Lovejoy is still shown around the world today and has quite an international following. People not only love the characters and stories, but also the places where it was filmed.

Belchamp Hall and Lovejoys is right in the middle of countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border where filming took place. You can cycle through the pretty lanes and eat lunch in the pubs that featured in the series.

The ground floor of the stable block became Lovejoy's workshop in the last two series and there are now two holiday cottages: one above the workshop (Lovejoys), which sleeps two people and this one which sleeps three.

Lovejoy Locations

If you are a fan of the Lovejoy TV show and are looking to visit some of the locations locally, here are a few ideas:

The Half Moon pub in Belchamp St Paul was featured in quite a few episodes.

The Fox Inn, Finchingfield was featured in the 1992 Christmas special (and the village of Finchingfield was featured in two episodes).

Hedingham castle was featured in the 1992 Christmas special as a castle in Prague.

Coggeshall was featured in series four and you may recognise the clock tower.

Townsford Mill, Halstead is an antiques centre featured in series four.

Long Melford was featured many times in the show with the interior of the Bull Hotel and many of the antiques shops.

Belchamp Walter church (just across the road from the cottage) was featured in the last episode called “Last Tango in Lavenham”

The Gardens

Outside, there is a tennis court for guests use, a large pond and historic walled garden, where a couple of peacocks roam and show off their splendid plumes.

Tennis racquets and balls are provided for you to enjoy a game, as are bikes and a BBQ

There is a small, enclosed garden for your own use where you can sit in privacy and enjoy your breakfast, BBQ or just soak up some sunshine.

Belchamp Estate is a wonderful rural area of valleys, brooks, ancient oak lined winding lanes and pretty footpaths meandering through an unspoilt countryside.

The famous Medieval Villages of Long Melford, Clare, Cavendish and Lavenham are all neighbouring or within a short drive and the market towns of Halstead and Sudbury just 5 miles away.

There are plenty of footpaths round and about the estate and beyond, passing through woodlands, ornamental canals, ponds and brooks.

There's also a pretty, 14th century brick and flint church, with some fascinating mediaeval wall paintings, just up the tiny lane.

The country lanes are very quiet and ideal for a cycling trip and just a few miles from Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham, Finchingfield and Castle Hedingham. There are plenty of farm shops and good quality pubs and restaurants nearby - everything you need for an idyllic stay in a beautiful setting.

The local pub “The Pheasant”  is 2.5 miles away and has wonderful food. See our webpages for information about local area.

To find out more about the attractions of the local area, including the lovely Pubs & Restaurants, please click on this link: 'Lovejoys'.

The Local Area

This is particularly beautiful area, rural with rolling fields dipping down into the nearby river tributaries of The Stour, along which you will find tiny historic villages with names like Foxearth, Cavendish, Clare, the three Belchamps ‘Otten’, ‘St Paul’ and your own ‘Belchamp Walter’.

Long Melford, which was the most inland navigable part of the River Stour - made famous by John Constables English Landscape masterpieces, is a short journey away by car and is a bustle of pubs, restaurants, antique shops and beautiful buildings – it is the longest Medieval High Street in England and one of the famous unspoilt Medieval Villages of Suffolk, like Lavenham, Kersey and Clare.

There are very many wonderful churches to visit like the unique round Crusader church at Maplestead and the majestic wool churches.

There are wonderful stately homes to visit like, Kentwell Hall with their world famous Tudor re-enactments and Halloween Screamsville events – the impressive Melford Hall with its ornate onion towers. The Italianate Palace of Ickworth, the marvellous Helmingham Hall with it fabulous gardens and many more.

There are interesting museums like the amazing Museum of East Anglian Life at Stowmarket, the museum is set in 75 acres of Suffolk countryside, with 17 historic buildings and almost 40,000 objects to view.

Moyses Hall, one of the oldest Medieval buildings in Bury St Edmunds, which houses a variety of collections on art, local and social history, the Suffolk Regiment, the Red Barn Murder, crime and punishment, death and witchcraft, and of course medieval life.

West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village plus a museum and restaurant.

Gainsborough House in Sudbury, which explores the life and art of Thomas Gainsborough - one of the greatest artists of his age.

Flatford Mill where John Constable was born and where he painted many of his masterpieces like ‘The Haywain’. There is an interesting exhibition of his work there and you can stand by marker posts, where he stood to paint his masterpieces. There are also lovely riverside walks from here and you can hire rowing boats in summer or take a picnic on the bank of the Stour.

The area has much to offer with its rural charm and unspoilt villages and just pottering around by bike or car to discover another little gem or pub is just a delight.

Further afield you will find castles and the unspoilt Suffolk Coast – about 60 minutes by car.

We are already planning our next trips in the Autumn and Spring to enjoy the area again in different seasons. Our expectations were exceeded. The welcome pack was beyond expectations. The location is superb with freedom to walk around the estate. The owners were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. They have obviously gone to the trouble to think of everything you might need - even a car cover, should the resident peacocks take a liking to your car!
