Cycle Suffolk

Cycle Suffolk: One of the real joys of staying with us at The Grove Cottages is just how easy it is to explore Suffolk by bicycle. This is a county made for cycling — not fast or frantic, but gentle, beautiful and endlessly rewarding. Quiet lanes, medieval villages, wide skies and countryside that unfolds slowly as you pedal along. every now and then desending into a tight hidden valley. For me, that’s Suffolk at its very best.

Nearly all of our cottages provide bikes for guests, which means you don’t need to arrive with racks, plans or pressure. You simply step outside, hop on a bike and see where the lane takes you. Cycling here isn’t something you schedule — it becomes part of the stay.

Cycling from medieval villages and timeless countryside

One of my favourite places to cycle from is Water Cottage, a medieval Hall House in the tiny and utterly enchanting village of Kersey. This is a landscape that almost demands slow exploration. From the cottage, I’ve marked out gentle routes around Kersey Vale, weaving through rolling countryside, past ancient farmhouses and along lanes that feel unchanged for centuries. These routes naturally take in three excellent local pubs, which I always feel is an important part of any successful cycle ride.

At Old Grove Farm, where six of our cottages sit together, the cycling is equally special. Here, the routes I’ve marked on the maps we provide lead guests through some of the prettiest South Suffolk countryside — broad skies, long views, quiet villages, flint churches and hedgerows alive with birdsong. These are rides designed to be enjoyed, not rushed, and they inevitably seem to pass welcoming country pubs at just the right moment.

Historic landmarks and hidden corners

From The Stables in Gestingthorpe, cycling takes on a slightly different character. The surrounding countryside rolls gently and quietly towards some remarkable historic landmarks. You can cycle to the Knights Templar Church at Little Maplestead, a wonderfully evocative place with a real sense of mystery, and onwards to Castle Hedingham, where the Norman keep rises dramatically above the village. It’s a ride rich in history, best enjoyed at a steady pace, with time to stop, look and linger.

Then there is Mill Cottage, set deep within its own private valley nature reserve — a place that feels wonderfully secluded. Cycling from here is about peace and immersion in nature. Quiet tracks and lanes wind through woodland, open valleys and unspoiled countryside, where the soundtrack is birdsong and the movement of water. It’s a place for unhurried rides, early mornings or late afternoons, and the kind of cycling that leaves you feeling restored rather than tired.

Gentle rides or serious miles — the choice is yours

For guests who enjoy longer distances, we’re also fortunate to be close to well-established cycling routes. Many of our cottages connect easily to the South Suffolk Cycle Route and wider national networks, offering serious mileage for confident cyclists.

Personally, though, I’m happiest tootling along the smallest lanes — the ones barely wide enough for a car, where the hedges brush your elbows and the seasons feel close enough to touch. Spring blossoms, summer grasses, autumn colour, winter light — cycling lets you notice it all. And I’ll admit, I rarely say no to stopping at the first pub that offers suitable “refreshment”.

What makes cycling with The Grove Cottages different

What really sets The Grove Cottages apart is that we love our guests to enjoy the countryside, even if it is only a 15 minute cycle round the tiny lanes to the pub. which is why we provide bikes for our guests free of charge and recommend the best routes to enjoy, we are lucky because the cottages are genuinely positioned in some of the most rewarding cycling landscapes in Suffolk. These are routes I’ve ridden myself, villages I know, and pubs I’m happy to recommend.

Whether you’re leaving directly from a medieval Hall House in Kersey, rolling gently through farmland from Old Grove Farm, exploring historic landmarks near Gestingthorpe, or cycling quietly past a nature reserve from Mill Cottage, the experience is the same: calm lanes, beautiful surroundings, and the freedom to explore Suffolk properly.

Cycle Suffolk slowly if you can. It reveals itself best that way.
