Grade 1 Listed and of Exceptional Historical Interest
The Tryst offers luxury and comfort without compromise, in the heart of Lavenham, Suffolk.
The Tryst is a really gorgeous and historic Grade 1 Listed House dating back to the early 15th century, in the picturesque village of Lavenham, widely accepted as England’s best preserved Medieval Village.
It is an amazing house to stay in and a rare joy to experience such comfort in such a wonderful old building.
This lovely house accepts dogs.
Cottage Walk Through
Cottage Walk Through
You enter The Tryst into a beautiful sitting room with a massive inglenook fireplace containing a cosy wood burner. There are ancient beams throughout and a beautifully decorated wood panelled wall above the fireplace runs a series of small historical alcoves. There is a large L shaped sofa and a big armchair to relax into.
The double doors in the carved wooden wall lead through to a good sized farmhouse kitchen with its wonderful working Aga stove and shaker style interior.
The kitchen is well appointed and looks out over the pretty walled ‘knot garden’ with its arbours and sun trap corners in which you can enjoy a relaxing drink or meal ‘al fresco’. To the right of the sitting room is the deep red dining room which easily seats 6 at its oak refectory table.
From here you carry on round to The Indian Room. This is a ground floor single bedroom with double oak doors leading straight out to the garden.
This Room also has a truckle bed which can be pulled out to accommodate an extra person at a squeeze but please call first to discuss this option as it restricts the space and is really only good for 2 children. There is a charge of £40 for the additional bed which can be added in the booking process.
Next to the Indian bedroom is the downstairs ‘wet room’ (shower bathroom).
Up the pretty winding stairs from the dining room is a large hall leading to the bathroom with its pretty roll top bath and the two double bedrooms. There is no shower attachment to the bath as the floor is waxed floorboards and water would easily go through to the ceiling below.
The Gold Room is the master bedroom. This is a light and airy room reaching up to the high rafters it boasts a twenty one arm brass chandelier. From here you can see the house that was featured in the Harry Potter films as his ancient country house.
Overlooking the pretty back garden is the French Room, which has windows on three aspects. The wonderful beam work reaches high up to culminate in the historic Crown Post. The room is furnished in a French theme and is a very romantic.
Ideally sleeping 5, The Tryst can accommodate 6, but please talk to us first if you have any concerns because we don’t want you to be uncomfortable.
The beautiful structure of the building with its Tudor nooks, wattle and daub walls, lovely antique furniture, magnificent beams, broad oak floors and uneven lines creates an extremely warm and cosy atmosphere to enjoy.
This is a house to really enjoy, but even historical buildings have to keep up with the times so you will find that it also has…
Good unlimited wireless broadband provided via BT.
A smart, internet enabled TV in the sitting room with access to Freeview and with Netflix too, so you are very welcome to immerse yourself in their extended library of films and TV series!
A Bluetooth enabled Bose iPod dock is also available.
A washing machine, dishwasher and fridge with freezer compartment are all hidden away in the kitchen.
Old and new books are available for you to read as well as magazines and AGA cook books.
Central heating is fitted throughout, with underfloor heating.
There is unrestricted parking outside the house and normally it is possible to park very close. For a fuller description of this beautiful ‘listed’ house please
There is a charming ‘knot-garden’ for guests to enjoy, it has a patio area with a large table and chairs for guess to eat outside and thee are garden lights for a romantic evening meal, there are many climbing on the garden walls and spreading over the central metal bower.
The garden backs onto all the other gardens that make up the heart of Lavenham.
Lavenham is widely regarded as England’s best preserved medieval village and is full of beautiful historic houses and lovely pubs and restaurants with pretty Suffolk countryside just a short stroll away.
One of the famous restaurants is The Great House, which is rated as one of the best French Restaurants in Suffolk, The Swan Hotel which is a gorgeous old coaching Inn with a fascinating bar where American Airmen from WW11 scrawled their names on the walls, it has a very highly acclaimed restaurant for non-guests and guests alike and a very good luxury Spa.
The Market Place is only 100 yards away and features the wonderful National Trust owned Guildhall, which featured as the backdrop for the 1960’s cult film “Witch Finder General” with Vincent Price. The Guildhall now houses a fascinating local history Museum. There are many good pubs, tea rooms, beauty salons, and lovely old fashioned village shops nearby.
Lavenham is really tiny but was once England’s 13th most prosperous town – in the 1500’s! Its importance stems from its wool and weaving trade reflected by its amazing array of historic buildings.
There are stunning marked circular walks around the village as well as down the old disused railway line to Long Melford, This walk is a designated Nature Reserve and Long Melford is another famous Medieval Suffolk Village, home to the Lovejoys TV series and a great place to go antique hunting.
This is a very beautiful and romantic holiday cottage in a really outstanding historic location, offering real 5 star quality and luxury.
Believed to date from the 15th Century, The Tryst is a fantastic Grade 1 listed example of traditional building and craftsmanship.
The frame is mainly English Oak and the walls are largely wattle and daub which is a composite building method in which a woven lattice of wooden strips (wattle) is daubed with a plaster made up of such materials as clay, animal dung, soil sand, horse hair and straw.
You can see this in the exposed section of wall in the French Room. In the main part of the cottage there are no synthetic materials used for insulation other than this, which for its thickness, age and ancient design, makes for a surprisingly efficient thermal barrier; keeping the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
We are passionate about continuing to use these low impact, locally sourced and environmentally sympathetic materials whenever we can and are fortunate to still have local craftsmen who retain the skills to do this.
Where possible we try to source provisions and firewood locally.
We also encourage you to visit the Gareth, Greg and Jen at the fabulous Lavenham Butchers (and deli) at the top of the street or Hollow Trees Farm shop a short distance away in Semer for amazing veg, meat and deli goodies.
For us food miles matter, but then it is easy to say that when there is so much high quality produce on your doorstep.
We even have local wine – Lavenham Brook. They are just down the road at Brook Farm, but much of their excellent produce can be found at Hollow Trees too.
You are in foodie heaven in this part of Suffolk. Of course we have to mention that Lavenham also has its own fabulous bakery too, which is a relative newcomer on the Market Square dating back to the only as far as the 17th Century. Out of this world food, is available at very low food miles!
With so much available within only a few minutes’ walk of The Tryst, you can certainly have a very happy car-free week, safe in the knowledge that you can source the best local food or visit some of Lavenham’s outstanding restaurants and pubs without having to drive. But if you want to go further afield, you still don’t need to use your car.
Why not explore the wonderful local walks that Lavenham has to offer? For instance Lavenham’s disused railway line is now a haven for wildlife and conservation.
We also recommend visiting the National Trust’s website, where you will find a really good guide for the Lavenham woodland walk or the longer Lavenham to Long Melford walk; but there are also many other options that you can find on the maps in The Tryst and online too.
You are in the heart of the prettiest part of Suffolk renowned for its unspoilt Medieval Villages of which Lavenham is the Jewel in the Crown.
The tiny Village of Kersey, with its ford, is just a leisurely drive down the river valley from Lavenham. You discover enchanting little villages like Brent Eleigh home to The Cock pub, one of the smallest pub I have ever come across – just one table, but great atmosphere. Monk Eleigh, Chelsworth, Kettlebaston and Bildeston
Supermarkets and shops are all in the Village.
If you like to go to a Market town then you have Sudbury just 15 minutes away and the wonderful Bury St Edmunds just 25 mins up the road.’
The area immortalised by England’s renowned Landscape Painter; John Constable and known as ‘Constable Country’ is right beside us.
There are many great country pubs, some special Gastro pubs like The Crown Inn at Stoke-by-Nayland and some high quality restaurants like The Great House or The Swan in Lavenham.
Please see my Local Guide tab for more information.
This area is amazingly rural and untouched by city life, with tiny single track lanes leading nowhere or to a pub, footpaths galore and tiny Medieval Villages where time seems to have stood still.
If you are staying for more than a weekend then a day out at the unspoilt Suffolk Coast is always a lovely trip.
The coast starts just 30 minutes away near Colchester or Ipswich and our favourite beaches and places on the coast are between 50 – 70 minutes away, places like Pin Mill, Nacton, Levington, Orford, Aldeburgh, Dunwich, Southwold and Mersey Island.
The nearby Medieval Villages of Long Melford, famed for its setting for the Lovejoys TV series, Nayland, sitting prettily on the river Stour, Polstead, with its bluebells woods and impressive views over the Box river valley are all close by and there are many more tiny villages with lovely walks and Pubs to explore.
This is an area you can feel a million miles away from City life and really relax and enjoy just being part of.

What the Guests Say...
Lovely cottage, far fulfilled our expectations. Wonderful historic village, thoroughly enjoyed our stay
It is a lovely cottage and garden
A charming medieval cottage which is very well equipped. Lovely bedrooms – and beds!
We had a lovely stay in this charming cottage. It has so much character. Lavenham is a wonderful village, great for local shops and crafts, some lovely pubs and walks. Will definitely come again!
A beautiful cottage with heaps of charm and authenticity. It’s a shame there aren’t more 15th century gems like this for people to stay in and enjoy. Overall, I would give this place a 100% satisfaction rating and 10/10 recommend to a friend.
The moment we stepped into The Tryst we were both very impressed with the high quality and history. The house was full of period features and really was like staying in a mini stately home with its wonderful secluded walled garden. If you are looking for a period cottage and a location that is in the centre of a beautiful medieval village, you couldn’t find a better property than The Tryst
Love the Aga, makes me feel at home. The garden is delightful – the suntrap for breakfast was perfect. Very relaxing, thank you
We loved The Tryst and Lavenham and the area – did a search for interesting and quirky cottages. We love old buildings! A real privilege to stay in such a well cared for and historic building. We would all love to come back
We had a wonderful time at The Tryst. The cottage was really well presented and it was a bonus to be able to sit out in the lovely garden. The accommodation was really comfortable
We were a little apprehensive about visiting a holiday property in the current Covid 19 situation. However, we felt that a Grove Cottage would offer the safety and forethought to give us confidence to relax. We were right! Everything at The Tryst was super clean and all precautions for a safe stay taken. Donna was extremely helpful and we lacked for nothing. It is a beautiful house in a wonderful situation and gave us a much needed break and change of scene. We mus also say a special thank you to Donna for promptly returning an item we had foolishly left behind.
We have had a lovely time in this beautiful cottage celebrating our 41st wedding anniversary. We initially were reluctant to come away following lockdown, but we knew Grove Cottages would take every precaution to make us feel safe and secure and we were right! Thank you. Donna was very helpful and answered queries very promptly
Lovely high quality cottage with lots of character and very cosy indeed. We really enjoyed our stay here
We loved the ambience of this historical cottage. Enjoyed the warm welcome by Emily. The weather was wet but we enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace. This place is recommended to all who appreciate attention to detail with cute corners and niches. Looking forward to coming again soon
We love Lavenham and have visited before, however never to The Tryst, what a treasure! We felt at home immediately and facilities are excellent. The log burner was gorgeous and we found the Blue Vintage Tea Rooms and The Swan always welcoming and excellent
Thank you for an amazing stay. We felt completely relaxed and enjoyed some real quality time together. The cottage is wonderful and the basket is always a lovely welcome. We always use Grove Cottages and we love how they have their own charm and character
What a privilege to stay in this gorgeous cottage! It is so homely and comfy with everything you need. Beautifully decorated and furnished with a wonderful view from every window. Th Grove basket of local goodies was very well received too! We shopped in all the little local businesses which make Lavenham special and just imbibed the historical architecture. Wonderful – we will be back!
Enjoyed a relaxing stay in this lovely old cottage.
Lovely stay, we enjoyed ourselves very much. The Tryst is a very characterful holiday home and very comfortable and cosy
We have had the most wonderful stay at this beautiful historic cottage. So incredibly cosy and comfortable in every way. Would come back at any time. Many thanks, a happy group of four humans an two small dogs!
The cottage was such a wonderful experience, steeped in history but at the same time with all the modern comforts! We were fascinated by the story of the hidden artwork and when we did the Lantern Walking Tour the story featured in that. Great way for our family of four who are spread around the world to relax on holiday. The book collection was great. Lavenham was delightful. When I was searching for a holiday cottage on Google, my requirements were three bedrooms, charming village, close to London, available for less than a week, near a cathedral town – which is how I found The Tryst. So it was luck that we found Lavenham and it was exactly the experience I was looking for. Thank you for such a wonderful stay before Christmas
The Tryst has been on our radar for a while and we are so pleased to have at last visited this beautiful house. A very relaxing break. Thank you
The Tryst is an amazing house without a flat surface anywhere! It is very comfortable and cosy on a winters evening. The duvets are blissfully warm and the drench shower full of hot water. I imagine it would be lovely to sit in the garden in the summer. Perhaps we will be back to try this. The cottage was perfect for a cosy weekend in a house full of history. It is obviously well loved. The welcome basket was much appreciated
It felt like and honour to stay in such a beautiful historic house in this lovely town. We had an excellent relaxing week and will certainly be returning to Lavenham
Lavenham Literary Festival! Five London ladies came to Lavenham. They stayed in The Tryst, they had a lovely festival – read everything they wished. The Tryst is warm and comfortable, had everything we wished. And if again they come to Lavenham, they will definitely choose The Tryst!
Came here for my 92nd birthday with my two daughters and their husbands. We really appreciated the welcome hamper – the bacon was delicious! The house is cosy and warm and we have enjoyed staying here, the beds are wonderfully comfortable.
A lovely week spent enjoying the cosy cottage and village. Loved the Aga and comfy bed. Fab welcome pack – thank you
Lovely property, full of history and in a wonderful location. Beautiful welcome basket with delicious bacon in particular! We had a lovely stay
This is a peaceful and calm house. We had a restful and lovely time. The house feels kind, Emily has been excellent and efficient. We will be back
A relaxing stay in a fine building, enjoyed sitting in the paved area of the garden. The Great House restaurant is splendid – as good as 35 years ago! Also Greyhound very pleasant for Sunday lunch
We have had The Tryst on our radar for a while now and we were very excited to finally be able to come and stay! A beautiful home and garden to celebrate our marriage in – and a special final stay in Lavenham before we move abroad. Dinner in the private dining room at The Swan was delicious; otherwise we had everything we needed here at the cottage. If I don’t return soon I know my parents will!’
Had a lovely stay at The Tryst, was so welcoming from the off and felt like home from home
Came to the cottage for my 21st birthday and couldn’t have asked for a lovelier place to stay! So cosy and homely inside and the garden was beautiful. A very special trip for us all.’
What a beautiful, historic cottage in an unspoilt village. Enjoyed reading all about the building – so different from our own homes. Aga easy to use, wood burner a triumph but unfortunately the storm (Hannah) prevented us from using the garden – one of us watched nesting birds from the warmth indoors! Lovely meal at No.10. Thank you for the welcome basket, very much appreciated
We had the most wonderful time in this cottage. Al of us liked the fireplace very much. We will definitely come back!!
We booked The Tryst for my mums 90th birthday week. We have had lots of fun and found the cottage very comfortable and beautifully furnished. Lavenham has made a great centre. Thank you
Lovely cottage in a great location. Great for walks, visiting nearby villages – Clare, Long Melford etc. Had a good look around the antique fairs and shops. Very good meal at The Great House
A wonderful, happy and very special weekend with my family. We relaxed, rad, walked and visited the Guildhall. We depart relaxed and happy
Very enjoyable stay, very comfortable. Great for relaxing in front of the fire. Did the railway walk from Lavenham to Long Melford and back again with lunch in The Swan at Long Melford. Farmers market was very good, very friendly
We were so excited about coming to The Tryst and totally overwhelmed by it’s beauty and history, it was quite emotional! Fabulously well cared for and perfectly put together property in a stunning village. The garden is lovely even in January, can’t praise the place enough and we could even bring our dog. Many thanks.
Our second Grove Cottage in Lavenham – such a beautiful town and a completely memorable house. Not only for it’s looks but for it’s welcoming atmosphere and cosy Aga warmth. We’ve had lovely weather, great walks and good meals. Thank you
Lovely cottage – our favourite so far with Grove. Thank you for the fab hamper
A fantastic cottage in a lovely location. Recommend Sunday roast at the Greyhound pub. Thank you for a lovely relaxing break.
Lovely cottage which is beautifully maintained and furnished. Comfortable to stay in and great to be in walking distance of lots of lovely places and great walks
We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your beautiful cottage. So wonderful to have lots of lovely shops on our doorstep. Thank you for the welcome hamper and for putting us at ease with cooking on the Aga. We have had perfect weather and visited Long Melford and Hadleigh. We loved mooching around all the shops as well as sampling the gorgeous cakes in ‘Chilli & Chives’ tea shop in Lavenham, so much so that we ordered a lemon drizzle to take home – Yum!
We have had the most delightful stay in your cottage – thank you! We all felt and truly appreciated the history of this wonderful dwelling. The garden is beautiful. My mum and aunt managed the steps and stairs well without too many bumps! Thank you Emily for your super efficiency – wonderful to walk into a warm and well lit home with the added bonus of the abundant hamper!
This is our second visit to The Tryst, which hopefully speaks for itself. It’s a delightful, well-appointed house and we feel very comfortable here. The basketful of goodies and flowers on the kitchen table provide a lovely welcome – much appreciated
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Lavenham, beautiful town/village and fantastic cottage! The welcome basket was much appreciated. Would definitely return! Thank you
The Tryst is the most beautiful holiday cottage – superbly kept to the highest standard. It is so welcoming, so cosy, so comfortable and really pleasantly cool in the amazingly hot weather we’ve been having. The garden is stunning – the perfect cottage garden. Our welcome basket was very much appreciated – filled with lovely local produce and tasty treats. We were genuinely excited about visiting The Tryst from seeing the beautiful pictures on Grove Cottages website, as it looked so amazing…it exceeded our high hopes and we would recommend it to anyone who wanted to stay somewhere incredible in a perfect place. Thank you so much for an exceptionally special long weekend.
What a beautiful cottage! Had a wonderful stay for our daughter’s wedding. The Tryst has been renovated to a fantastic standard in perfect keeping with the period. Hosting was second to none and we couldn’t fault anything. Can’t wait to return!
As veterans of stays at Grove Cottages varied selections, we have once again had a very enjoyable stay at The Tryst. Loved the Aga and the cosy atmosphere of the cottage. The garden is delightful. Lovely village and eating options and everyone so friendly and helpful.
Beautiful cottage and beautiful weather – what could be better?!
We had the most relaxing and enjoyable time – so cosy and welcoming with so many thoughtful touches. Wood burning stove and Aga were a joy to use, and the roll top bath! Local butchers incredibly helpful. Could have happily stayed another week. Look forward to next time. Big thanks.
What an absolutely divine time we had! The fire mesmeric, the bed gorgeous, the bath sumptuous! The best start to 2018 we could hope for. The Tryst even rivalled our wedding weekend! Will be coming back to fall in love all over again soon!
A fabulous four nights! We enjoyed eating out each evening but above all, The Tryst has been wonderful. Thank you
Beautiful cottage and well equipped. Ideal location for shops, walks and places to eat. We could not fault anything, perfect break!
What a perfect cottage! We have had a wonderful time staying here, enjoying the town and watching our friends get married. We would love to return in the future.
A truly fabulous cottage! Visited Lavenham for the weekend whilst attending a wedding and have truly fallen in love with it. The Tryst is superb! Wonderful beds and general comfort. Very clean and plenty of attention to detail. Emily was very welcoming and a great host. Will definitely return
Most enjoyable stay. Lovely cottage, great places to eat locally; very friendly ‘locals’. The garden is a joy and has given me many ideas, excellent all round.
We’ve loved staying in this beautiful ancient house. It’s so comfortable and well equipped – the perfect place to hunker down when the rain’s lashing outside and to enjoy lunch in the garden when the sun is shining. Our thanks to Emily for making the place so welcoming.
A very enjoyable stay. Came down for a wedding in Long Melford – loved wandering around. Could have spent more time here, but family duties dictated otherwise. The cottage was cosy and every need catered for. Many thanks.
A very happy Easter weekend – even better with the hot cross buns and golden eggs in the welcome basket! Thank you.
Our second stay at this gorgeous cottage and we were not disappointed. The cottage is immaculate, very cosy and in a perfect position – a few minutes walk to Lavenham High Street and the famous square. We feel like we have been here much longer than a long weekend and look forward to returning soon. Many thanks.
An enjoyable stay at a historically fascinating home. Lavenham is beautiful, we all enjoyed the Guildhall.
Another amazing stay! A fabulous cottage, can’t wait to stay again! Thank you!
We brought our mum and dad here to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary/80th birthday and it couldn’t have been better. Thank you for sharing your beautiful, special home with us. It’s such a privilege to be able to stay in such a lovely place. We’ll be back!! Thank you Emily – you’re a fab housekeeper.
Came all the way from Mauritius to visit Lavenham and what a beautiful cottage to stay in. It was perfect and couldn’t fault it one bit. Everything from the bed to the welcome basket was divine. Will definitely be staying here again with family.
Thanks for a lovely stay and the prompt attention of your manager to sort the problem in the living room. Everything was comfortable and the beds were lovely.
Fabulous cottage, warm, cosy and very comfortable. Especially love the beautifully laundered bedding and towels (smelled so fresh and fragrant). Cannot fault anything, we will definitely return.
Beautiful setting in a glorious town with a great garden for catching the sun. We are very pleased with everything and will recommend this property and the service from Grove Cottages. Many thanks.
A very special cottage in a fabulous location. Great to stay somewhere so comfortable and cosy as well as dog friendly, within an amazing village. Magical secluded garden -couldn’t be better
Fab house – had a great time!
Cottage like a tardis! Lovely to have somewhere there are enough plates etc to have family over for supper.
A great base for my 40th! Family joined too – we have stayed here before and it was just as lovely as we remembered.
Wonderful weekend break at The Tryst – was perfect and loved the hamper. Great pubs and lovely location in Lavenham.
Emily could not have been more welcoming on arrival. Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend; walking around the picturesque village and sampling the delights of The Swan and the numerous tea rooms, were just some of the highlights – stupendous!
I just wanted to let you know we had a wonderful time at The Tryst – it’s probably the nicest holiday cottage we’ve ever stayed in! Emily welcomed us very warmly, and the house was very comfortable.
Back to The Tryst for the second time this year, this time with family. The cottage, as always is lovely and cosy. Enjoyed walks, pottering and a great meal in the Greyhound. We will be back again.
We had a lovely break. Comfortable beds, great location with nice pubs and restaurants.

A beautiful cottage in a wonderful location.
Really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is warm and comfortable and Suffolk is a nice place to be, when the sun shines (as it did mostly).
We have thoroughly enjoyed our short break in this stunning 16th century “old world” cottage. The garden was delightful and then sitting by the Aga eating cream teas on the scrubbed pine table, was idyllic. Thank you for such a wonderful respite from our busy lives.

The buildings in Lavenham are so interesting we were delighted when we were invited into a cottage that we had been studying. The owner was enchanting. Thanks Simon & Pippa – a wonderful stay in your special Tryst
