The Experience - Self Catering At Deepwell Granary

The thatched Deepwell Granary is part of a stunning Grade II listed building dating from the C16th to serve the farm small holding at Deepwell.

This cottage has a private enclosed garden and there is also a large wildflower meadow and wooded garden to enjoy with campfires, hammocks, seating and a bell tent to dream away the sunny days.

Deepwell, where the owners also live, is set in the pretty vale of Buxhall. This is a magical countryside retreat.

Deepwell Granary is happy to accept dogs.

Cottage Walk Through

Cottage Walk Through

The entrance to the Granary is via the private off road car park and through to the enclosed garden with its fire pit and outside seating area.

The front door takes you into a hallway, with the luxury shower bathroom to one side and then into the main room.

Downstairs is a large double height open plan room with the original timber frame exposed, and a large floor to ceiling window with views to the garden.

The comfortable sofa faces a cosy gas flame fire – this being a sensible alternative to a wood burning one due to the ancient thatched roof 🙂 The room forms an L shape and within that is a modern well laid out kitchen.

Leading from this beautiful and airy ground floor is an open staircase which brings you to the gallery level, containing the luxury bedroom and reading area, this overlooks the open plan area beneath and out onto the garden.

Well behaved Dogs are always welcome, please refer to this web page All About Bringing Pets for Charges, Rules and how this cottage may suit your pet.

The Gardens

You have your own private enclosed garden to enjoy meals and relax with an evening drink.

Just off the drive to the Granary you enter a magical area of grassy woodland glades, lawns and orchard. Here you can take a stroll around, swing from trees, lie in a big hammock, or light up the fire pit and BBQ or enjoy a sun downer by the pretty French table and chairs, and enjoy the views over the rolling countryside.

If you are feeling a bit more active then you can play boules or badminton as there is ample space and all equipment is supplied.

Outside

Set in the rural Vale of Buxhall, surrounded by gentle rolling hills and views across the fields; Deepwell Granary is in an area of beautiful countryside, woods and arable farmland.

There are plenty of footpaths for walking, local picturesque villages to visit and good pubs to investigate.

Green Credentials

The restoration and renovation of this historic listed building was carried out by local craftsmen specialising in Historic renovation, they made use of many reclaimed materials where possible and used many traditional building methods.

The cottage has its own waste water treatment system.

The owners are keen gardeners and have lovely vegetable areas and friendly free-range chickens.

The grounds are a haven for many birds and small animals and a patient guest will see a wide array of wildlife there.

We have two electric points in the driveway for guests who need to recharge their electric cars.

Deepwell is a two acre organic smallholding, set in the Buxhall Vale, producing a wide variety of food for family and friends. The site includes free range poultry, bees, a kitchen garden, orchard, soft fruit garden and a polytunnel. We also harvest the wood to keep the winter fires burning (having vowed never to buy wood again, following a purchase of damp wood from a petrol station a decade ago.)

Deepwell is run on permaculture principles – a system of design that enables natural ecosystems to flourish. It adopts whole system thinking, a more natural approach to food production. For example, branches are chipped to make bedding for the chickens, which in time gets spoiled and goes onto the compost heap. The compost is used in the kitchen garden, producing healthy vegetables to eat and the waste peelings are fed to the chickens, which in turn produce eggs and so on. It is a design system that values resources and minimises waste. The result is a productive plot and diverse ecosystem where nature can flourish. This is quite different from mainstream agriculture, reliant on agrochemicals and producing a monoculture at the cost of everything else.

At the same time, Deepwell is also a lovely space to unwind and relax. Private spaces have been created outdoors to enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside. Guests are welcome to idle away an afternoon in a hammock, to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the field, or sit around a firepit and enjoy the stars.

Local wildlife is rich and varied in Buxhall Vale. This includes hares in the adjacent field that you can see most mornings. As well as Muntjac and Roe deer, there is a herd of Red deer that sometimes pass by in the early morning or at dusk. On a cold autumn night, you occasionally hear the haunting sound of the stags rutting. There is also a Barn owl that nests nearby and if you are lucky you’ll see him pass close by on his evening hunt.

There are some lovely walks nearby with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. For those who fancy a walk to a pub, there are three pubs within a half hour walk: The Chestnut Horse in Great Finborough and The Brewers and The Five Bells, both in Rattlesden.

  • We got home from a week at Deepwell Granary yesterday, and I have nothing but praise for such a gorgeous space. Murray and Sophie (the owners) were friendly and helpful but left us to it (perfect). We were impressed from the moment we pulled into the driveway. The photos don’t do it justice, it’s just absolutely beautiful. It was myself, my partner Ollie, and our dog, and it was the perfect setup for us. The welcome basket was a nice touch. The folder full of local information (including vets, just in case) was super helpful and we used it a few times for ideas. The Granary was lovely and private, the only noises being the birds, sheep, and occasional passing tractor. All the furnishings were lovely, shower was hot and powerful, bed super comfy, and it was nice to have Netflix and Prime. Would definitely recommend as a peaceful spot to get away from the world for a while.

Set in beautiful countryside, the Granary is certainly a place to unwind and get away from it all. The lovely hosts, Sophie & Murray and indeed their two lovely children made us feel very welcome. Their garden which they kindly share with guests was large and interesting – just a shame we didn’t get to see the sunset because of bad weather. Lovely area with lots to do and great walks.
