The Purleigh Bell - traditional country pub serving great homemade food and local ale. It is located about 15 minutes away by car or a three hour walk that takes you from Heybridge Basin to Maldon and then along the old railway line to the hillside village of Purleigh. Booking is recommended as it can get busy.

Fishing

Chigboro Fisheries – A 53 acre complex of lakes just a mile away catering for both Trout and Coarse Anglers. The fishery is open every day from 8am. All you need to do is pitch up and someone will come and find you.

There are three trout lakes, boat and bank fishing, tuition and tackle hire, 4 carp lakes. There is also a fishing lodge.

Ingatestone Hall – nice pub in nearby Stock  called The Hoop.

Kentwell HallLong Melford –on  special open days you will be transported back to Tudor times and  meet the lord and lady of the manor and all their staff going about their daily routine. You will also be able to roam around their beautiful gardens and visit the animals at their rare breed farm.  Great day guaranteed.  The village of Coggleshall is on the way and is also worth a visit on the way home.

Lavenham is another beautiful place and is known as one of the best preserved medieval villages in England - this and Long Melford's Kentwell Hall and antiques warehouse are a nice day out. The Swan on the high street has a good reputation and a spa, and The Great House is a well known destination restaurant.

Le Talbooth is a smart restaurant to go to near Dedham for that special occasion or The Sun Inn in Dedham would be a great place to go if you are looking for a meal and a walk along the riverbank to Flatford Mill - or hire a rowing boat from the Boathouse restaurant and boat hire and row there, maybe have a picnic on the way, it's lovely.

 

Vineyards:

Grapes have grown in Purleigh since Roman times and the wine produced from New Hall Vineyard in 1215  was sent to Runnymede for the signing of the Magna Carta. Tiptree Jam Museum tells the story of how village life used to be and how the art of preserve making has advanced over the years at Tiptree. The museum is free and you book an afternoon tea if you wish at the tea rooms.

Museum of Power

Housed in a former Water Pumping Station, the museum contains a fascinating collection which ranges  from a working overhead machine shop to a petrol powered iron. The jewel in their crown is the ‘Lilleshall’ triple expansion steam pump now back on steam after 50 years.

Nature reserves

Blue House Farm Nature Reserve

This 600 acre farm is situated on the north bank of the River Crouch.  It has been managed by Essex Wildlife Trust since 1998. The flat fields have been grassland for the last 100 years and are used as a feeding ground for Brent Geese. Around 2,000 geese come to the area during the winter.
