Beautiful Victorian House in one of Suffolk's Prettiest Villages
This cottage will really appeal to guests looking for a characterful cottage in an unspoilt village location, with great walks and fantastic local eateries.
This beautiful little Victorian House is in one of Suffolk's prettiest villages set in the beautiful Stour Vale.
It has a lovely cottage garden which is fully enclosed and the river runs just behind the property, there are walks in all directions and little lanes to cycle down.
You enter the cottage from the off road courtyard where you park your car, and through a gate into the pretty back garden. The kitchen breakfast room opens out through French doors onto a glass covered patio where you can enjoy a meal in comfort looking out into this lovely walled cottage garden.
Beyond the kitchen there is a cosy little dining room with many original Victorian features including a hidden cupboard staircase.
The dining room leads through to a very comfortable sitting room with a lovely open log fire.
Behind the cupboard door in the dining room are the stairs up to the three bedrooms and bathroom; typical of a Victoria cottage, these stairs are quite steep with treads narrower than modern stairs - care is therefore needed when using them.
My Aunt had the same kind of hidden staircase and until I found out that they were actually behind a door in her sitting room, I always thought she never went to bed, but was some kind of 'Super Aunt' on the go day and night.
Upstairs there is a large double bedroom a small single bedroom and a tight double bedroom overlooking the garden.
The bathroom has a bath with a shower fixed above it with glass pull out panels.
There is central heating throughout.
Romney is set back slightly from the main road that runs through this pretty village. It's entrance is through the back garden so it faces towards the sun and away from the road. Romney enjoys private off-road parking
This cottage will really appeal to guests looking for a characterful cottage in an unspoiled village location with great walks and pubs.
The owners are keen gardeners and have created a really pretty area behind this house, part of which winds down to their own house and part of which is the pretty walled garden that Romney looks out onto.
There are two places to sit in the garden to enjoy sunshine in the morning or afternoon, and one of them is covered so even on a less than perfect day, it is still possible to sit out if it’s warm enough and enjoy a meal or glass of wine al fresco.
The village of Cavendish is particularly pretty with a beautiful village green captured by many painters and photographers, because of its perfectly placed Suffolk Pink cottages and historic church. Cavendish has an excellent pub and a few shops. There are very pretty walks and cycle rides straight from the door.
The owners have retained much of the Victorian character of this cottage and added to it with period furniture. Where possible, eco friendly cleaning materials are used and locally sourced ingredients are supplied in the breakfast hamper.
There are bicycles provided for guests to enjoy the local area and maps to guide you round the footpaths
Cavendish is just a short drive from Long Melford which is where the TV series Lovejoys was based and is a bustling medieval village crammed with pubs, restaurants, shops, antique shops and warehouses and two stately homes:
The famous wool church and the stately homes of Kentwell Hall and Melford Hall (NT) are just on the other side of the Green.
To find out all the pubs, restaurants, walks, villages and much more in order of distance from Romney please click here
Supermarkets and shops are within a 10 minute drive.
The famous village of Lavenham ‘England’s best preserved Medieval Village’ is just eight miles away.
The pretty village of Clare with its Antique Warehouse and walks round the castle ruins and up the disused railway footpath beside the river, is just 2 miles away and always a treat.
There are many great country pubs, some special like The Crown Inn in Stoke-by-Nayland, The Black Lion in Long Melford and some high quality restaurants like The Great House and The Swan in Lavenham and many more scattered around the local villages.
Please see my Local Guide tab for more information.
This area is amazingly rural and untouched by city life, with tiny single track lanes leading nowhere or to a pub, footpaths galore and tiny Medieval Villages where time seems to have stood still.
If you are staying for more than a weekend then a day out at the unspoilt Suffolk Coast is always a lovely trip.
The coast starts just 30 minutes away near Colchester or Ipswich and our favourite beaches and places on the coast are between 50 – 70 minutes away, places like Pin Mill, Nacton, Levington, Orford, Aldeburgh, Dunwich, Southwold and Mersey Island.
The nearby Medieval Villages of Long Melford, famed for its setting for the Lovejoys TV series, Nayland, sitting prettily on the river Stour, Polstead, with its bluebells woods and impressive views over the Box river valley are all close by and there are many more tiny villages with lovely walks and Pubs to explore.
This is an area where you feel a million miles away from city life and can really relax and enjoy just being a part of.

A beautiful cottage and the perfect place to spend a relaxing weekend. Thanks for making us feel so welcome and we're already looking forward to coming back.
We loved our stay at Romney Cottage. We had such a warm welcome from Sue & Peter. The cottage is lovingly and beautifully furnished. We were here for the Christmas week visiting family and were so touched by the Christmas tree and decorations and the welcome basket with Prosecco. We all loved the cottage and playing games by the log fire. Also amazing to have a cot and high chair provided for our two year old. Such a beautiful area
We have had a lovely pre Christmas break. The cottage was lovely and cosy and we were made to feel very welcome in the village.
We celebrate our anniversary every year in a Grove Cottage and have never been disappointed yet...Romney Cottage is perfect for a long weekend
Sue & Peter, many thanks for the use of Romney - a lovely relaxing time was had by all.
I'm going to be very boring and agree with all the positive things everybody else has said about the cottage. It was perfect for our long weekend break.
Thank you so much for everything. We had a lovely weekend in your beautiful cottage. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves - this is our second visit here and we hope to be back - it is so cosy and beautiful!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Romney. What a cosy and comfortable place to spend a weekend! We received a warm welcome from Sue and were grateful for the wonderful basket of supplies. Cavendish is a beautiful village. I am sure we will be back to explore the Suffolk countryside further. All of the beds were very comfortable and the cottage is very well equipped for all the needs of a family. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into making the house as practical and enjoyable as possible. Thank you.
This was a birthday treat and what a lovely treat it was! Beautiful cottage in a lovely area. The cottage is so well resourced and the owners are so welcoming, they came to check that we were settled in. We would definitely recommend this cottage! All fantastic :)
Really lovely cottage with comfortable beds. Thanks for the bacon and eggs which made a delicious breakfast. Went on lots of walks in and around Cavendish. Overall a really enjoyable long weekend. Thank you
First of all this box is not big enough to publish all our positive comments, but in a nutshell, fantastic holiday cottage, area has you busy every day. Hosts were the nicest people we have ever met at a holiday let.
Who needs to go abroad?! We've enjoyed two weeks of fantastic weather in an absolutely fabulous cottage, in a beautiful picturesque village. Many thanks for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home, so worth our 1,000 mile round journey to go here and back!
A warm welcome from Sue, a very nice food hamper that we enjoyed. The cottage is well appointed, everything you could need. We loved sitting in the garden having breakfast and a glass of wine or two in the evenings. The lights around the garden are very pretty.
We have been thoroughly and delightfully impressed by the warm welcome from our "hosts" Sue and Peter, as well as the high standard of the cottage. Absolutely no stone had been left unturned as we couldn't fault anything! We'll be back here certainly and will try out some other cottages in the Grove portfolio.

The information packs are very well put together, would highly recommend to anyone thinking of visiting the area. This is probably the only cottage I would be able to give such high scores to out of the many we have stayed in. Grove Cottages came highly recommended to us and Romney has not disappointed
