A Wonderfully Romantic and Secluded Location
One of the three 'Lovejoy' cottages: A superb artistic conversion of a Water Mill, Lovejoys Mill is a very special treat for a lucky couple.
Important Cornovirus Safety Measures you should read if booking this cottage
This is a 5 Star luxury cottage
This stunningly converted 17th Century Mill is at the very end of a tiny little lane in the Belchamp Brook river valley beside a beautiful Mill Pond with views over pretty water meadows that have remained unchanged for centuries; its setting could hardly be more romantic or peaceful.
This cottage accepts dogs.
Lovejoys Mill sits in the Estate of Belchamp Hall where the famous TV series Lovejoy was filmed, it is surrounded by beautiful countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border.
There are two entrances to Lovejoys Mill; one on the ground floor leading directly into the lovely Bedroom and one up the outside staircase into the Farmhouse Kitchen Dining.
If you enter by the staircase there is a small outside landing at the top where you can enjoy a ‘sundowner’ and gaze over the old water meadows.
You enter directly into the spacious kitchen area with its massive counter created out of a big mill bench; the stylish atmosphere of this stunning conversion of a Water Mill is created by retaining and exposing the artisan origins of the Mill, but discretely enhancing them with modern living essentials.
The interiors are furnished in a way that delightfully counters the industrial origins with rich points of art and comfort.
Walking round the well-equipped kitchen into the open plan sitting room you get a studio like ‘Loft Feeling’ because of the high ceilings, beautiful old wood floor and the many original works of art on the walls.
As you relax back into the comfy leather sofa next to the big log burner, you can look out of the pretty arched windows to the countryside around you, or straight through the stable door out onto the Mill Pond and conjure up in your mind, the rich and varying history of this lovely Mill to its present day state incarnation.
Lovejoys Mill has a large smart TV with Netfix.
Historic solid Oak stairs wind you down into the sleeping area and leave you looking across an antechamber to a the impressive Arch where the ‘Overshot Mill Wheel’ once worked its magic and is now a modern bathroom with a walk through ‘Rain Shower’.
Round the back of the stairs along the short hall is a beautiful bedroom with light streaming through the windows and where you can leave the stable doors open at the foot of the bed and gaze out over the mill pond.
Gentle underfloor heating warms up the Suffolk White brick floor and carefully designed lighting make this a cosy place to enjoy.
The juxtaposition of the luxurious curtains, furnishings and art against the industrial nature of the original Beams and rough walls, create such a special atmosphere rarely achieved and is very calming.
If you look carefully you will even find the pencil calculations of the Millers orders going back centuries scribbled on the walls.
Remember the popular BBC series ‘Lovejoys’ starring Ian McShane, which ran constantly from 1986-94 and is now re-running on some Freeview channels, It was all about the 'lovable rogue' and antiques dealer called Lovejoy.
Well, Belchamp Hall was a regular feature as the home of Lovejoy's love interest, Lady Jane, and was known in the series as Felsham Hall.
Lovejoy is still shown around the world today and has quite an international following. People not only love the characters and stories, but also the places where it was filmed.
Belchamp Hall and Lovejoy's is right in the middle of the countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border where filming took place and you can cycle through the pretty lanes and eat lunch in the pubs that featured in the series.
The ground floor of the stable block became Lovejoy's workshop in the last two series and there are now two holiday cottages: one above the workshop (Lovejoy's), which sleeps two people and this one which sleeps three.
If you are a fan of the Lovejoy TV show and are looking to visit some of the locations locally, here are a few ideas:
The Half Moon pub in Belchamp St Paul was featured in quite a few episodes.
The Fox Inn, Finchingfield was featured in the 1992 Christmas special (and the village of Finchingfield was featured in two episodes).
Hedingham castle was featured in the 1992 Christmas special as a castle in Prague.
Coggeshall was featured in series four and you may recognise the clock tower.
Townsford Mill, Halstead is an antiques centre featured in series four.
Long Melford was featured many times in the show with the interior of the Bull Hotel and many of the antiques shops.
Belchamp Walter church (just across the road from Lovejoy's) was featured in the last episode called “Last Tango in Lavenham”
There is a tennis court for guests' use up at Belchamp Hall which is just a short stroll away, also there is a large pond and walled gardens, where a couple of peacocks roam and show off their splendid plumes.
Tennis racquets and balls are provided for you to enjoy a game, as are bikes and a BBQ and a fully equipped laundry room – please note that there are no laundry facilities at the Mill.
While not having a formal garden there is a big grassed area around Lovejoys mill leading to Estate woods and fields that you can walk through, you can also sit out on the big patio and enjoy the views over the beautiful Mill pond.
Being at the dead end of the tiny single track lane nobody is going to be driving past you so I have recommended this as a cottage for guests who want to enjoy a 'Big Garden' as the garden is basically the Estate.
Belchamp Estate is a wonderful rural area of valleys, brooks, ancient Oak lined winding lanes and pretty footpaths meandering through an unspoilt countryside.
The famous Medieval Villages of Long Melford, Clare, Cavendish and Lavenham are all neighbouring or within a short drive and the market towns of Halstead and Sudbury just 5 miles away.
There are plenty of footpaths round and about the estate and beyond, passing through woodlands, ornamental canals, ponds and brooks.
There's also a pretty, 14th century brick and flint church, with some fascinating mediaeval wall paintings, just up the tiny lane.
The country lanes are very quiet and ideal for a cycling trip and Lovejoy's is just a few miles from Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham, Finchingfield and Castle Hedingham. There are plenty of farm shops and good quality pubs and restaurants nearby - everything you need for an idyllic stay in a beautiful setting.
The local pub “The Pheasant” has been awarded Pub of the Year for 2014/5, it is 2.5 miles away and needless to say has wonderful food. See our webpages for information about local area.
This is particularly beautiful countryside area, very rural with rolling fields dipping down into the nearby river tributaries of The Stour, along which you will find tiny historic villages with names like Foxearth, Cavendish, Clare, the three Belchamps ‘Otten’, ‘St Paul’ and your own ‘Belchamp Walter’.
Long Melford, which was the most inland Navigable part of the River Stour - made famous by John Constables English Landscape masterpieces, lies just 12 minutes away by car and is a bustle of pubs, restaurants, antique shops and beautiful buildings – it is the longest Medieval High Street in England and one of the famous unspoilt Medieval Villages of Suffolk, like Lavenham, Kersey and Clare.
There are very many wonderful churches to visit like the unique round Crusader church at Maplestead and the majestic Wool Churches that dot the area.
There are wonderful stately homes to visit like, Kentwell Hall with their World famous Tudor re-enactments and Halloween Screamsville events – the impressive Melford Hall with its ornate onion towers. The Italianate Palace of Ickworth, the marvellous Helmingham Hall with it fabulous gardens and many more.
There are very interesting museums like the amazing Museum of East Anglian Life at Stowmarket, the museum is set in 75 acres of Suffolk countryside, with 17 historic buildings and almost 40,000 objects to view.
Moyses Hall, one of the oldest Medieval buildings in Bury St Edmunds, which houses a variety of collections on art, local and social history, the Suffolk Regiment, the Red Barn Murder, crime and punishment, death and witchcraft, and of course medieval life.
West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, which is what it says, plus a museum and restaurant.
Gainsborough House in Sudbury, which explores the life and art of Thomas Gainsborough. One of the greatest artists of his age.
Flatford Mill where John Constable was born and where he painted many of his masterpieces like ‘The Haywain’. There is an interesting exhibition to his work there, and you can stand by marker posts where he stood to paint his masterpieces. There are also lovely riverside walks from here and you can hire rowing boats in Summer to take a picnic on the shores of the Stour.
The area has much to offer with its rural charm and unspoilt villages and just pottering around by bike or car to discover another little gem or pub is just a delight.
Further afield you will find castles and the unspoilt Suffolk Coast – about 60 minutes by car.

Lovejoys Mill is a delightful upside down property that is characterful and set in a peaceful location. The stable door allows for wonderful views across the pond that even on the dreariest of days allow the outside in. Great, quiet location and comfortable property for a staycation in which to do nothing.
Heavenly! Great base from which to explore beautiful Suffolk and commune with the locals, Ducks, pheasants, moor hens, sheep hares, peacocks and even the odd muntjac deer! The tranquility of this place has been most welcome. Loved this old mill!! Breakfast hamper was most welcome. Thank you
Dear Char & Helen, back again for our seventh visit to the mill. As quiet and peaceful as ever and we are already booked for Christmas at Lovejoys. Keep up the good work. Best wishes

What a location!! The house is simply beautiful, so much attention to detail, the welcome pack is full of lovely fresh produce to kick start your stay. Perfect retreat for our anniversary weekend
Use Grove Cottages multiple times per year; this definitely goes on the list of properties to repeat. I'd love to come in spring/summer and make use of the seating outside. In winter, it's been a delight to go out wrapped up for chilly weather then return to underfloor heating, awesome shower and cosy log burner. I loved being snug while listening to the wind and rain. Great facilities, lovely welcome hamper. I'll be back. Thank you

Lovely weekend here, wonderful setting.
Delightfully peaceful! We saw munjacs in the sun and cosied up in the rain!
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place to stay when needing a break from the past paced city life. We did bring our own kitchen stuff to cook some fancy dinners, only to discover just how well equipped the Mill was!! Top notch!! We saw a few wild muntjac across the pond, and really enjoyed everything about the Mill. We will certainly be back...highly recommend!! This is such a hidden gem of a place! It was lovely also to be welcomed by Charlie and hear where/how the Mill was transformed! We will certainly be back. Thank you -:)
We have never know such peace on a short holiday, never wish to leave!
This place of all the Grove Cottages (and we have been to a few!) is our favourite. The 'Grove Preparation' is here and that is always welcome but it is the location that scores the final win! In any season this is an incredible refuge from modern life. Don't change a thing!
Magical place. Starry starry nights!
We had a wonderful long weekend. Such a peaceful and relaxing place. We didn't want to leave
A hidden gem on our doorstep, beautiful to be able to look at the stars with no light pollution. A perfect place to reconnect with nature and our opportunity to remind ourselves of the joys of simplicity. Less can definitely be more.

We loved it, and like everyone else will most certainly come again!

It has been beautifully restored with great attention to detail. Above all it is situated in such an idyllic and tranquil spot. Perfect for a weeks relaxation. We found it hard to tear ourselves away.
We have enjoyed a perfect and wonderful stay at Lovejoys Mill. The accommodation is so comfortable and welcoming. The surroundings and wildlife are amazing - from the kingfisher feeding at the pond, to seeing 4 swans waddle past, stopping off to be fed from our window. The owls calling to each other at night, all very romantic and we can't wait to come back for a longer stay to explore further afield. Just lovely.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our second visit to Lovejoys MIll. Many thanks to Helen for making the cottage clean, warm and welcoming. Thanks to Charlie too for dropping by. The Mill has all the facilities and comforts we could ask for and our dog loves it here too. We would recommend a stay here at any time of the year. The kitchen facilities, TV and internet are all superb and we found the cottage to be a 'home from home'.

We had a lovely stay at Lovejoys Mill. The cottage is beautiful and is fully equipped with everything you could want. It is in such an idyllic location, the peaceful mill pond, snow drop woods and of course the lovely, friendly horse. We enjoyed a visit to Gainsborough Spa, Sudbury, Long Melford and The Pheasant where we had a beautiful dinner. Superb cottage - great find. We will be back - faultless!
This time last year we stayed at Lovejoys and had no complaints there. We chose Lovejoys Mill this time and again no complaints. We absolutely love it here and will definitely be back. The greeting from Helen makes it all the more personal, friendly, polite, bubbly and professional
This is our first visit to Lovejoys Mill and we've had a very enjoyable and relaxing break. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped and dog friendly too. A chilly night with a log fire is the perfect antidote to stress. Many thanks to Helen & Charlie for a wonderful winter break.

This is our third visit to Lovejoys Mill. It really is perfect, we love the location and the wonderful Mill is so warm, cosy and comfortable.
Wonderful house and setting with the dawn call of the waterfowl. Great to explore Clare, Cavendish and the Lovejoy connection
We have a lot of short breaks in the Suffolk and Norfolk areas, and this beats all of them. Fantastic accommodation and liking the Lovejoy TV series helped our decision when browsing the internet.

We come back time and again to Grove Cottages. Not only do you know that they will be well equipped and in the most idyllic locations, but that each cottage has it's own unique and cosy character. Lovejoys Mill excels - what a truly wonderful place!
Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Peaceful and romantic - exactly what we wanted from our weekend away. Thank you.

Excellent short break. Everything about the "mill" was excellent - including the eccentric bathroom!
Excellent property to unwind and relax, beautiful decor, everything you need for a getaway from it all weekend. Fab walks, pubs and quaint towns, didn't want to leave. Second time with Grove Cottages and will be returning for a third, fabulous choice of cottages to choose from. Thank you for a lovely weekend break.
Idyllic - a perfect marriage of location and accommodation, and we even had sunshine! Thank you to all for a wonderful visit - we plant to return!
Stayed for the weekend. Beautiful place. Our 16 month old daughter loved it - would love to come back.
An excellent example of a 'Grove Cottage'. Wonderful location, excellent styling and a perfect welcome from Helen and Charles. Thank you so much for letting us be the very first visitors to the old mill - you have created such a welcoming and beautifully styled space to spend a weekend, or a week, or a lifetime! Very happy memories - thank you.
