Gabriels Place is situated in Walsham le Willows; a small picturesque rural village near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. This 1640's romantic self catering holiday cottage is owned by an award winning Architect who has really put the stamp of 'Design, Style and Quality' on it.

The Cottage

  • Gabriels Place has a spacious 'back to the bare bones' feel about it, where all the original beams are exposed from the walls right up into the roof rafters and high quality oak joinery has be used to create impressive open staircases, modern kitchen areas and architectural features. This with its lovely open fire and massive comfy sofa make an interesting and characterful atmosphere that is still very cosy.
  • Please note anyone with feather allergies, this is not the cottage for you as the sofa and soft furnishings have feather filling.
  • The pretty kitchen diner is fully equipped to produce any kind of menu and there is a useful utility room with washer / dryer machines downstairs and a stylish shower room. There is even a piano in the sitting room, an old family friend who has come to the end of the line, but is happy in this quiet corner of Suffolk; untuned but still loved and ready to do his best. Floors upstairs are made from the most wonderful original old broad elm wood I have seen
  • The cottage is set back from the road with a parking area in front of it, there is a small enclosed courtyard garden where you can have breakfast or slowly make up your mind which wine to drink with the Sunday papers.
  • The owner of Gabriel's Place is an Architect who believes passionately that our lives (including our holiday lives) should be as sustainable as possible and with this in mind the cottage is insulated to the highest possible standards, given its age and construction.
  • He also has invested in solar water heating by so that you will be able to bathe in the very lovely bath tub and wash the dishes in water that has been at very worst, preheated by the sun or at best completely heated by the sun. It really is a good feeling to lounge in the bath and know that this is possible as a result of a very natural and sustainable process... Enjoy.

  • One of the attractions of the cottage is that it is priced for a couple, but has the advantage of a designer staircase leading to the Suffolk Landing; which is a like a hall room where there are 2 additional beds - ideal for a third adult, or up to two children who can be accomodated at no extra cost (a modesty screen is provided for privacy).
  • The main bedroom is bright and airy with two windows to catch the sun most of the day and a skylight in the high vaulted ceiling. The bed is a regular double at 4.6 x 6ft 3 (135 x 190). With the main bedroom there is a pleasant open and airy en-suite bathroom.

The Location

  • Garbiels Place really is a lovely rural getaway, it is one of our many cottages near London and is also just a short drive away from Bury St Edmunds and the historic city of Cambridge.
  • This cosy holiday cottage will appeal to those who want to have a peaceful stylish break away from the stresses of modern life. Just look at the images of the village, it looks more like a collection of farms and ancient buildings rather than a village but everything is on your doorstep, from provisions to a very decent wine merchants and friendly pubs.
  • The location makes Gabriels Place ideal for visiting Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and the unspoilt Suffolk Coast. There are beautiful local walks for your break in the countryside and bikes are provided to explore the surrounding area and its maze of tiny lanes. A tennis court is in the village of Walsham le Willows... just ask John when you arrive and he will book it for you.
  • A lovely little cafe has just opened up in the village called Moriarty's Cafe, great for Breakfast, Lunches or teas and of course the 'Leaping Hare' at the famous Wickan Vineyard is just a short drive away and a treat for special Dinners

I've just come back from Suffolk after a 5-day break with you. I stayed at Gabriel's Place and I have to say it was the most wonderful experience I've had of a UK holiday. The cottage we stayed in was perfect in every way. It was clean, well equipped and, most importantly, beautiful. Located in a really smashing village, it was ideal for a friendly village store and sociable village pub. We had two dogs with us and the location was ideal for them too. We could either embark on some scenic walks direct from the cottage, or we could jump in the car for some equally wonderful treks. We were greeted by a breakfast being delivered to our door. Top quality food from the top quality grocer next door - a lovely touch. One final word for John, our landlord. It was so nice to speak to someone who was so welcoming - not always the case when renting from someone. He was happy to answer and questions we had to ensure our stay was as enjoyable as possible. Many thanks to you and to John.

Our holiday at Gabriel's place was just great and we think you're a fine host. In future we'd like to spend our holiday again at Gabriel's place but we're afraid that will never be happening. But it also means we won't fit in your cottage anymore ;)
