The cottage sleeps 2 but there is a chill-out room in the roof space where a friend or 2 can also sleep on a sofa bed - children under 8 are not advised to stay because of the steep ladder staircase to the spare sofa bed.
The big attraction about this unique cottage is not just it's uplifting desigh but its wonderful location.
As you relax into the sofa you have glass on 3 sides of you and a high arched ceiling; this gives you a great feeling of 'oneness' with your surroundings and at night the stars put on a wonderful show and during the day when the big patio doors are open you are almost picnicing in the large wildflower meadow that surrounds this cottage.
Guests really enjoy this closeness to nature and if you have a doggie then he will thank you for ever.
There are many lovely footpaths going in all points of the compass straight from The Pump House including the Pilgrims Way which actiually goes through the lower part of your meadow !
This steep little river valley is one of the very prettiest parts of Suffolk and has a magical rural quality to it where time seems to have stood still for ages - right now there are even Osprey in the Valley and it is only 65 miles from London - Amazing.
The Pump House is a Frank Lloyd Wright style, ex water pumping station serving the village, it has been imaginatively converted to offer wonderful views and embraces the most modern ‘green’ Heat Transfer system for under floor heating and hot water and an ecological waste water Reed Bed system.
There is a 1200mm telescope in the ‘Inside Out Room’ – so called because of the unobstructed views on 3 sides - to view the wonderful black night sky.
There is a large wooden decking to lounge about on and enjoy the meadow from and a BBQ picnic area close to the stream.
The tiny meandering lanes lead to the prettiest local villages, which have the best gastro pubs in the area.
This is a very different and interesting place to stay in, the feeling of the place is spacious and modern but at the same time very in tune with it’s surroundings – and very relaxing.
Well behaved pets are always welcomed - please ensure your pet respects the meadow and the cottage and is not allowed to damage anything or sleep on any furniture or in the bedrooms. Please do not leave dogs alone in the property and please bring suitable bedding and towels for your pet, Dog charges apply.
The cottage is a complete little home and facilities include modern heating, flat screen TV, DVD / CD player and CD’s, books, games, guides, maps, local information and a fully equipped kitchen including electric cooker and microwave, washing machine and dryer.
There is also a cot and high chair. Bikes are freely provided - The South Suffolk Cycle Route runs past the cottage.
This is a special place if you want absolute peace and quiet and a special closeness with the environment, it is also a doggies dream.
All prices include vat, towels, soap, linen, heating, a 'Proper English Breakfast' welcome pack and a supply of breakfast basics like real coffee and tea etc.
A travel cot is provided for babies (please bring your own bedding)
Well behaved pets are always welcome, please refer to this web page All About Bringing Pets for charges and how this cottage may suit your pet.

About Suffolk
In Charles Dickens's days, boys living in Scotland and here in East Anglia would be allowed to leave boarding school a day early because it took so long to get back home to those places.
Even though we are just 60 miles from London, this area was always very inaccessible and remained so until very recent times.
Now the local mainline train journey to London is a mere 45 minutes and a car journey takes about an hour and a half.
But still Suffolk has retained an unusually strong independent rural atmosphere and one of the great joys of the area are the beautiful little hamlets that even locals get lost getting to though the meandering 'spiders web' of tiny lanes and byroads. Many of these villages are wonderfully preserved in their medieval origins, our local village of Lavenham being a fantastic example.
The area is very rich in History from the Saxon treasure of Sutton Hoo and the rebel Queen Boadicea who defeated the Romans, right up to the many expeditions of Settlers leaving for America - in fact the First Governor of Massachusetts came from this tiny hamlet of Edwardstone when I am based at The Old Grove Farm.
The landscape and the Architectural beauty of the area has long inspired Artists to work and move here. The greatest English landscape painter John Constable painted all his famous masterpieces along the Stour which is just 5 miles from The Grove Cottages. His work undoubtedly created this landscape as the quintessential English Landscape, which is one reason why visitors to the area feel so at home.
Flatford Mill where many of Constables most well known works of art such as 'The Haywain' were painted is now a National Trust area devoted to this artist and preserving his memory and the area he made so famous.
The Great Portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough lived in Sudbury which is the closest town to us and it is a real pleasure to visit his home which is now a very interesting museum and exciting showplace for local artists and events, it also has a wonderful print making workshop where courses on all kinds of printmaking are constantly held and very much sought after.
The great artist Sir Alfred Munnings, famous for his portraits of Rural Suffolk Life lived and had his studio close to the river Stour at Dedham and these are now an interesting museum devoted to him and his works of art.
For more information, please visit: my 'What to Do' Web Pages where I have an extensive insiders guide to South Suffolk
Above are a few photos I took around the area of Lavenham, Long Melford and Polsted - The seaside is at Aldeburgh which is a totally unspoilt seaside village, famous for its Arts events and good food - it is about 50 minutes from Lavenham.
Below is a recent article about the Suffolk Coast
Joanna Symons, Telegraph Travel Newspaper January 2nd 2010.
'Popular though the Lake District and West Country are as tourist destinations, they can be rather damp. If you want to reduce the risk of a rainy holiday, statistics show that you should head east.
Suffolk for instance, had only about a third as much rainfall as the Lake District last summer. It also happens to have one of the loveliest stretches of coastline in Britain.
The Met office regional statistics per annum.
The Lake District Suffolk
Rain fall 2300 - 3900mm 600 - 660 mm

“Our best ever cottage holiday”
Monday, 28th of July, 2008, Helen & Family:
Just back from our 5 days at The Pump House where we all had a fabulous time. I would just like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Pump House (I am sure the spectacular weather helped a little). The property is unique and I have just recommended it to my sister whose husband is a Pump Engineer! As we wrote in the visitor's book the children and the dog were very impressed with the whole set-up - the river, the meadow, the chill-out room (a bedroom with a TV is a treat indeed for my two!). We had some wonderful walks including this morning a 7.30am breakfast picnic in a pine tree plantation somewhere between Stoke-by-Nayland and Polstead. Thank you for all the little extras that made the Pump House a home-from-home and our holiday one that will be remembered for a long time to come. We had to promise the kids that we will come back or I think you may have had a couple of sitting tenants!!
Sunday, 20th of July, 2008, Debbie & Paul:
Fabulous stay at The Pump House. Idyllic spot with a superb garden much appreciated by our Labradors Archie and Hercules, who particularly enjoyed the stream!
Tuesday, 3rd of June, 2008, John & Carol:
We enjoyed ourselves so much we had to write a small novel in the guest book at the cottage! It's absolutely fantastic and we would recommend to everyone. Views, weather, walks and people are all lovely. Has the virtues of the garden of Ede. We want to buy it and live here always!
Tuesday, 3rd of June, 2008, Laura & Tom:
The idyllic location & sensitive redesign of an industrial building made the Pump House an enviable place in which to relax, attempt to stargaze & digest some great local meals. Dont want to leave!!
Thursday, 1st of May, 2008, Joy & Family:
From the greeting complete with flowers and an amazing transformation inside the building to delight – to the lovely quiet setting and entertaining birds on the feeder, we really enjoyed our four nights. The Pump House worked for us!

‘Paradise Found’ if you seek tranquillity, peace of mind and total relaxation, in the most perfect of settings. This is as good as it gets in ‘self catering’, next to nature. Nayland, Polstead and the river walk near Wissington are a ‘must’. Can’t wait to return.
