About Suffolk

In Charles Dickens's days, boys living in Scotland and here in East Anglia would be allowed to leave boarding school a day early because it took so long to get back home to those places.

Even though we are just 60 miles from London, this area was always very inaccessible and remained so until very recent times.

Now the local mainline train journey to London is a mere 45 minutes and a car journey takes about an hour and a half.

But still Suffolk has retained an unusually strong independent rural atmosphere and one of the great joys of the area are the beautiful little hamlets that even locals get lost getting to though the meandering 'spiders web' of tiny lanes and byroads. Many of these villages are wonderfully preserved in their medieval origins, our local village of Lavenham being a fantastic example.

The area is very rich in History from the Saxon treasure of Sutton Hoo and the rebel Queen Boadicea who defeated the Romans, right up to the many expeditions of Settlers leaving for America - in fact the First Governor of Massachusetts came from this tiny hamlet of Edwardstone when I am based at The Old Grove Farm.

The landscape and the Architectural beauty of the area has long inspired Artists to work and move here. The greatest English landscape painter John Constable painted all his famous masterpieces along the Stour which is just 5 miles from The Grove Cottages. His work undoubtedly created this landscape as the quintessential English Landscape, which is one reason why visitors to the area feel so at home.

Flatford Mill where many of Constables most well known works of art such as 'The Haywain' were painted is now a National Trust area devoted to this artist and preserving his memory and the area he made so famous.

The Great Portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough lived in Sudbury which is the closest town to us and it is a real pleasure to visit his home which is now a very interesting museum and exciting showplace for local artists and events, it also has a wonderful print making workshop where courses on all kinds of printmaking are constantly held and very much sought after.

The great artist Sir Alfred Munnings, famous for his portraits of Rural Suffolk Life lived and had his studio close to the river Stour at Dedham and these are now an interesting museum devoted to him and his works of art.

For more information, please visit: my  'What to Do' Web Pages where I have an extensive insiders guide to South Suffolk

Above are a few photos I took around the area of Lavenham, Long Melford and Polsted - The seaside is at Aldeburgh which is a totally unspoilt seaside village, famous for its Arts events and good food - it is about 50 minutes from Lavenham.

Below is a recent article about the Suffolk Coast

Joanna Symons, Telegraph Travel Newspaper January 2nd 2010.

'Popular though the Lake District and West Country are as tourist destinations, they can be rather damp. If you want to reduce the risk of a rainy holiday, statistics show that you should head east.

Suffolk for instance, had only about a third as much rainfall as the Lake District last summer. It also happens to have one of the loveliest stretches of coastline in Britain.

The Met office regional statistics per annum.

Rain fall         2300 - 3900mm          600 - 660 mm

We've had a delightful time in a delightful cottage.

Saturday, 10th of July, 2010, Vicki and Wayne:
One week of enjoying life like 'The Larkins', only with electricity, mod cons and no children. In short, 'Heaven'! You will be hard pushed to find a holiday home that's had more thought and consideration put into it.

Monday, 31st of May, 2010, Judith:
The old Bakery was very cosy. The owners did a great job restoring it. The owners were very helpful with information and pamphlets so I could plan my days activities.

Sunday, 23rd of May, 2010, Martin and Heather:
Very comfortable, very relaxing - a perfect weekend break!

We had a beautiful time in the Bakery. It really did live up to all expectations and the week went too fast. So much to see and do and a fantastic haven to come home to every night.

Sunday, 9th of May, 2010, Mark and Verity:
We stay at a lot of different places and often feel let down on arrival that the place is not as it appears in the pics on internet. Not so here, it's the first time we've felt the pics just don't do it justice. The actual experience is difficult to capture in a picture - It surpasses what is already v.good on internet. Bono the dog agrees...He felt very welcome and the dog biscuit a lovely touch!

Monday, 3rd of May, 2010, Hannah and Miles:
Absolutely loved the Bakery, such a welcoming cosy cottage! Would recommend to anyone!

Monday, 12th of April, 2010, Barry and Alison:

We really enjoyed our stay, the cottage was very comfortable and well equipped. We found loads to do and I will be recommending the cottages to our friends.

Friday, 2nd of April, 2010, Elizabeth and Mark:
Excellent dog walks - wildlife we spotted were deer, fallow, golden Plovers in a flock, munkjac and otter tracks, buzzard, lapusing, linnets, gold finches, moorhen and of course less wild 'the ducks'. Interesting churches and local history to be discovered - good art galleries in Lavenham particularly the contemporary art gallery of Paul Evans and the wildlife one. The tapestry shop is good too with tapestries from Belgium well worth a look, and local crafts as the Kersey Pottery not to be missed.

Friday, 26th of March, 2010, Jo and Dickie:
Ducks, chickens, Max the cat, open fire....

Sunday, 14th of March, 2010, David and Gill:

Monday, 8th of March, 2010, Emily and Rosie the pooch:
I have had a very special weekend at The Bakery - perfect in every way and completely lived up to expectation. Love this cottage: the beams, bricks, warmth, candles, fire, lamps, rugs, fairylights in the garden! I could go on. Peaceful, safe, happy weekend which included two beautiful walks using the U.S map you provide. So lucky to have sunshine too! Thank you for creating such heavenly holiday cottages. I hope I will return.

Sunday, 21st of February, 2010, Ian:
An absolutely perfect place to escape the 'Humdrum' of modern life and relax.

Sunday, 21st of February, 2010, Eirian and David:
We had a great time and so did Ruby the dog. Cosy cottage despite snow, wind and rain. Brilliant for dog owners with many well marked paths and lots of dog friendly pubs. Lovely countryside and great people in this area who were friendly and welcoming. Can be recommended to all, even if you haven't got a dog !!

Monday, 15th of February, 2010, Jaclym and Jay:
A romantic valentines weekend in an idyllic cottage. If you want to getaway from it all, cosy up to your loved one in front of a roaring fire, this place is for you. We chose The Bakery based on the pics on the website but the reality surpassed our expectations. The service is great, even Maxi their cat is friendly! We'll certainly be back to try the other cottages.

Friday, 28th of August, 2009, Steve and Joanna:
What else can we add that has not already been written here! Its all true. The Bakery is one of the most romantic relaxing and beauitful bolt holes you could ever wish to find. We have had a week away together and have managed to let the whole real world disappear just for a short while as we explored beautiful Suffolk. Max the cat has been our companion and his gorgeous furry body has kept our knees and feet warm many times. What a lovely cat! Go to the Great House in Lavenham for wonderful food - We did and my wonderful boyfriend asked me to marry him there! And I said yes! So we leave with very special memories and we will definately return- and yes I think we did give D and T a run for their money! (D and T's comments could not be published due to being too x-rated!

Enjoyed a relaxing week at The Bakery. Mark made us and our Westies very welcome. We felt particularly at home in the en-suite- with its Jim Lawrence loo roll holder- identical to the one we have in our cloakroom at home! It prompted us to go over to their showroom in Stoke by Nayland and get a few more fittings!! We loved Suffolk- our first trip there and hopefully not our last- it is a beautiful setting and so much more to see.

Friday, 13th of July, 2007, Alan & Sandra:

We had an excellent & relaxing week’s break. A real ‘Home from Home’ – a million miles away from the stresses of modern life but with all the creature comforts. It was a wonderful surprise to come back to the Christmas Tree in The Bakery – Just another of the wonderful attentions to detail. Our first visit to Suffolk & we look forward to returning in the future and making The Grove Cottages our base.

A very peaceful place and great for quiet contemplation but also a big adventure for toddlers who like ducks, chickens, tractors, bikes, deer, dogs, cats, and Autumn leaves.

We had a perfect weekend break. The Bakery is very cosy and the mattress, duvet and pillows were so comfy, and the bath towels so fluffy. It was an effort to get out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and abundance of things to do. We highly recommend Grove Cottages, and hope to return.

A home away from home –quiet, peaceful and tasteful. I’d recommend Grove Cottages to anyone and everyone. We were both thoroughly impressed with your set up. The properties themselves were gorgeous and your guest info superb. Even though it rained, your provision of bikes and general local area info meant that we found plenty to do and enjoy. The only disappointment is that we didn’t stay longer. Kate Pain, Editor, Fitness First Magazine.

Splendid atmosphere – we arrived wired as you do when you live in London, and after 3 glorious days feel completely at peace. “An Oasis”.

Friday, 20th of February, 2004, Mike & Pat:
Wonderful time. Great welcome to a beautiful cottage, with music playing quietly as we arrived, and flowers to move us - a breakfast hamper to fill us. The eggs were delicious. Warm, friendly and helpful hosts. Thank you so much. A real bolthole away from the rush of life and quietness to be together.

Wonderfully calm and relaxing – the perfect ‘Honeymoon’.

Sunday, 10th of August, 2003, Justin & Maria:
For our 2 hour drive we found a real sanctuary. Stressed? Need a break? Grove Cottages is the place….. and don’t forget the Pimms, Mark can provide the fresh mint!!!

Friday, 1st of August, 2003, Gill:
The only ‘rush hour’ at The Grove is the ducks passing your door heading for breakfast. Each visit holds new delights. See you next time.

Wednesday, 2nd of April, 2003, Deon & Tabatha:
It was a brave step to book our honeymoon here sight unseen, but I could not have wished for a more perfect setting. The attention to detail, superb interior design and stunning over all effect made this a place I would recommend to anyone who respects and searches for beauty. Antique hunting (& finding !), canoeing down the Stour & gourmet dining – wonderful.

A 30th birthday to remember. Breakfast on the lawn was brilliant - even the dogs didn’t want to leave!

Monday, 10th of February, 2003, Antonio & Vicky:
Romantic - Cosy - Roaring log fires - Beautiful walks. Fantastic Local Pubs and wonderful pets to borrow….. A little slice of Heaven on Earth.

Friday, 22nd of November, 2002, Mark, Lottie & Anya:
This was our third visit to The Grove Cottages – and what a fantastic surprise holiday, thanks to our competition win (thank you Mark for the nicest email we’ve ever opened!). If you have booked a weekend, make it a week. If you have booked a week, make it two. Whatever you book it won’t be long enough as, like us, you won’t want to leave. What a gem – we really ought to keep it to ourselves. Thanks again, We’ll be back !

Sunday, 13th of October, 2002, Dave & Sue:
When we pulled up into the car park, the welcome we received was wonderful and when we entered our beautiful cottage we knew that the Rest & Relaxation that we desperately needed was going to be ours for the weekend. This cottage has been our sanctuary & the peaceful, homely and relaxed atmosphere will be remembered by us always. Thank you.
