Mill Cottage is a romantic hidden treasure in its own Valley and overlooks the Mill Pond where you can go 'Wild Swimming'. This is a special place for those who want to be right away from traffic and enjoy the beauty of being in your own valley with 4 nature reserves all backing onto it.

The Cottage is in a lovely little 'Back to the Good Life' setting in a remote small-holding in its own valley - all very, very eco. And it has its own 11 acre fenced in meadow where your doggies can hurtle around in total safety. There are Badger watching hides, an Owl Tower and a Story telling thatched hut - all very magical.

Bantams cluck around the courtyard busily working up the energy to provide you with the best eggs you have tasted and the trees you can see in the photos are where the Nature Reserve starts. There is also 70 acres of the owner’s organic farmland to walk on or around which includes an eleven acre fenced in meadow for your doggie to hurtle around in without any worries.

The Eleven acre fenced off area does have owl nesting boxs at its centre and if they are in use this area has to be closed off, but there are still lovely footpaths around the whole small holding and direct access over stiles into the adjancent Nature Reserves.Obviously doggies will have to be on leads when near the courtyards where the bantams run about or in the meadows where sheep may be but so long as you have control over your doggie other areas are fine to let him or her off the lead.

Eloise and Anne walking down the valley.

The 11 acres where you can walk your dog in safety as it is completely fenced in. You can see the 2nd Owl Nesting box on the Pole in the centre where there are lovely views up and down the valley.

Mill cottage has one double bedroom and a sunny living room with a lovely wood-burning stove and beautiful views over the Mill Pond.

Downstairs there is a proper kitchen and dining area and a large walk in wet room style bathroom.

You can visit the cellar and see the impressive state of the art 'Heat Exchange Unit' which gathers heat from the meadow and uses it to heat the underfloor heating and the hot water. This is a very, very ecologically designed place to stay in and you can read the specifications below.

The historical nature of the place, its superb position and the wonderful build methods have resulted in a very elegant and peaceful atmosphere - once you are here you feel there is no need to go anywhere else - just relax.

The owners have just completed an amazing 'Barn Owl Tower' - this is a small two-storey building built of strawbales on a course led by "Amazonails" (whose house in Wales won the Grand Designs eco section recently). It is in a small meadow by the stream, near the fenced woodland where guests can let their dogs run free.

Well behaved pets are always welcome, please refer to this web page  All About Bringing Pets  for charges and how this cottage may suit your pet.

The Owl Tower - almost ready 23rd July 2008. This is a wonderful place to watch nature from. A pair of barn owls have just taken-up residence in the Barn Owl Tower and can be seen hunting everyday, in the late afternoon and evening. Two owl chicks have been ringed in July, and one of the guests saw a Goshawk in the same month.

Guests can climb up a ladder inside and watch the wildlife pass by from the windows from September to January. The barn owl box is in the roof space. There are badgers, roe deer and Muntjac to be seen, plus long-tailed tits, greater spotted woodpeckers, whimbrel, snipe, Mandarin duck (believe it or not) and little egrets, plus the other more common birds.

There is also a 'Story Telling Hut' which is Thatched and made of straw bales and lime plaster, it looks out over the picturesque valley and has a bench all around the inside; a wonderful quiet place to read a book or daydream the day away.

The owners have even established a special place where guests can spend an evening Badger watching

Guests can also go 'Wild Swimming' in the half-acre spring-fed Mill Pond adjacent to the cottage. It has recently been drained, de-silted and the banks profiled to slope gently into the water. Since doing this a family of mallard have been brought up on the Mill Pond for the first time, and a family of tufted duck, plus the usual moorhens.

You can go 'Wild Swimming' in this lovely mill pond.

There is a small rowing boat which guests are welcome to use, plus a coracle (an ancient form of boat made on a recent course) to have fun with, and two wooden jetties to launch them and swim from.

"Assington Mill runs an unusually varied programme of short courses on mainly rural topics at the weekends, with an average of 12 students at a time.  If you would like to participate, we will offer a 10% discount on the price of each course to those booking Mill Cottage.  See the website, http://www.assingtonmill.com for details of the programme, and mention that you are coming to Mill Cottage when booking."

Fishing.

Rainbow trout (12"+) have been in the pond since the summer, plus bream, rudd and roach. John Lattimore, a local fishing tutor is happy to give private lessons to those staying in Mill Cottage. Please contact Anne direct to arrange this on 07770 550570.

Anne says that to protect the fish stock from diseased or through injury could guests please observe the following rules:

National rod licence holders only to fish.
Fly-fishing only
Barbless hooks to be used at all times
Strictly no spinning
Every angler must have the use of a landing net, and disgorger Keep nets are not permitted.
£20 per weekend, £35 for 4 days, £50 for the week.  Rainbow trout taken to eat - £2.50 per pound but no more than two fish per stay to be taken.

The pond is spring fed so there is a constant flow of clean water, which is what the fish like.

For all those keen on fishing, the Mill Pond is currently stocked with Rudd, Roach, Bream and Rainbow & Brown Trout. We do ask that you use barbless hooks when fishing. For a special price of £20 per person - which goes towards the upkeep of the Pond and fishing licence - the owners are happy to let you catch 2 trout and eat them for dinner, for one day during your stay at the cottage ! Further information can be found in the 'What to Do' folder located in the cottage.

There are advanced plans to re-instate the big waterwheel (adjacent to the cottage bedroom window) in the autumn 2008, which will then provide electricity for the cottage.

Call me if you are interested - this will be one of our favourite cottages and is especially good for walking as it has 70 acres, backs onto three nature reserves and it accepts pets.

This is what the owners have to say...

Assington Mill is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but our dowsing tutors insist that it was a pre-historic settlement, with at least three temples, or henges. The present buildings date from the 17th century, but we have found re-used timbers from earlier dates during the renovation. The nine farmyard buildings are made of many different materials and we have taken great care not to alter the character of this unusual settlement. When we moved here in 2003, all the buildings were derelict.

Since we had both worked in different parts of the construction industry, we have had great fun with the restoration work, and we do know the dimensions of the long lost waterwheel and this will be put back some time in 2008 and ease the electricity usage of the cottage.

We especially wanted a Conservation Architect's design using "green" technology for the Mill Cottage conversion and we are happy to say that we now have such features as:

A wonderful ground source heat pump for the under-floor heating and hot water
 Sheepswool for insulation,
 Lime products rather than cement.
 Lime plaster
 Limewash,
 Linseed paint for the joinery,
 Cedar weatherboarding,
 Hand-made plain tiles,
Locally-made terracotta pamments on the ground floor.

There are lovely views out over the half-acre millpond which can be enjoyed from the sitting-room and bedroom on the first floor. The wet room bathroom is fully-tiled with a heated towel rail. We have made a completely new kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, combination microwave/oven, induction hob and a silgranite sink, breakfast bar and plenty of cupboard space, again with views over the pond.

There are 70 acres of our own small-holding to explore, plus three adjacent nature reserves and there are a further 11 acres of new woodland which are fenced in, and very useful for exercising dogs. We are situated in a totally hidden valley with no road access apart from out own cart track.

Our land backs onto Arger Fen Nature reserve, Spouses Grove Nature Reserve and the private Tiger Hill Nature Reserve all of which are a lovely hilly and wooded areas with lots of meadows and walks.

What is unusual about Mill Cottage is that no buildings, other than the farm buildings, can be seen from it, nor any roads.

At night, it is virtually free of light-pollution and the only noises heard are made by birds, foxes, deer and the domestic poultry.

The owners also run eco and craft courses, have a look at their lovely website at www.assingtonmill.co.uk There may at times be students of the courses camping in the small camp area on the site.

All prices include vat, towels, soap, linen, heating, a 'Proper English Breakfast' welcome pack and a supply of breakfast basics like real coffee and tea etc.
The cottage is a complete little home and facilities include modern heating, TV, DVD player, books, games and a fully equipped kitchen including electric hob and oven and a microwave.
A travel cot is provided for babies (please bring your own bedding)

Assington Mill and nearby: The 70-acre Mill Farm is a private nature reserve consisting of an unusually varied habitat. There are four acres of wetland, seven of woodland, and five unimproved areas of pastureland, fenced in for Cheviot sheep, and the rest is organic and arable. We are growing onions this year.

Over a kilometre of new hedges have been planted, together with 12 acres of mixed native species woodland. The three adjacent nature reserves (Spouses Grove, Arger Fen and Tiger Hill) are very beautiful and varied in form. Spouses Grove is known for its bluebell woods and ancient wild cherries, Arger Fen has just had its conifers removed creating space and light for the indigenous flora and Tiger Hill is a wonderful jungle of fallen trees. These four reserves are also known as home to rare dormice. Birds seen here are woodcock, snipe, mandarin duck (we had a nest of 10 last year), little egret, heron, kingfisher, and many other more common birds.

Mill Cottage is on the edge of Constable Country, with many beautiful Suffolk villages in easy reach, such as Boxford, Lavenham, Long Melford, Dedham, Flatford and Hadleigh. Roman Colchester is ten miles away, historic Sudbury (Dicken's Eatanswill) is about six miles away, with its interesting market. Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds are within striking distance.

There are also some excellent gastro pubs in Nayland (the White Hart or The Anchor), and Stoke by Nayland (the Crown and the Angel) and Lavenham (the Angel) where there is also an first class restaurant, the Great House, together with a golf course and full health club facilities within three miles.

Here at Assington Mill, we can offer an unusually wide variety of different experiences: Badger watching (Bob has spent most of his life studying them), Dowsing, all sorts of crafts, Bushcraft etc. See our website, www.assingtonmill.com for full details. There are plenty of interesting walks, which we will show you, and it is possible to borrow bicycles to explore the extensive networks of cycle tracks.

Castle Hedingham is nearby with its Norman Motte and Bailey. The Moat is one of the finest still standing in Europe. Roman Colchester Castle has a good museum. Kentwell Hall has been carefully restored over many years and specialises in Tudor re-enactments. Long Melford Hall nearby is often open to the public.

Essex and Suffolk contain more listed buildings than most counties. Anne is an ex-conservation officer and will be happy to point out all the special places nearby and answer your historic building/architecture questions.

The River Stour (of Constable fame) flows into the estuary at Brantham and from there it runs past Manningtree (about 30 mins away by car), a charming seaside village, and Mistley, once the home of the Witch-finder General, where there is a vegetarian cafe on the quayside overlooking the river. Further down is Harwich, an unusual survival of an 18th century town, which has some good pubs and a well-known restaurant, the Pier, which is right on the quay. From the quay, you can take ferry boat trips to Shotley and Felixstowe, Britain's largest container port. On the way to Harwich, you can visit the secret wartime bunker at Mistley. There are sea trips on offer from Orford, home of the wonderful fish-smokery (a definite must for those who like seafood), and to Havergate Island, where there is a large flock of avocets. Minsmere, one of the best RSPB reserves, is not far away on the east coast, and also Welney, in the fens.

Art galleries: to be found in Lavenham, Colchester (the Minories), Cambridge and the Constable exhibition at Flatford Mill on the River Stour.

There are theatres in Colchester (the Mercury), Ipswich (the Wolseley) and an exciting 18th century theatre in Bury St Edmunds. Apart from the usual cinemas there are special screenings in Polstead (3 miles) and Flicks in the Stix at Hadleigh, and an Arts Cinema in Cambridge.

We are very fortunate to have regular and nationally well-known jazz evenings at The Fleece in Boxford (3 miles).

Classical music is freely available, especially choral music, and there is an annual Suffolk Villages Early Music Festival in the summer, which takes place in churches within five miles of here, and features international artists. The best free show, in our opinion, can be found at the choral evensongs in the Cambridge Colleges. Bob and Anne spend a lot of their time singing, so can easily help you find concerts locally. Snape Maltings, home of Benjamin Britten, also has a well-known festival and is about an hour by car from here. There is also a craft centre and a good pub there, together with some lovely walks along the river.

Suffolk is an excellent place for a church-crawl and most of them are kept open during the day. We can lend you the "Thousand Best Churches" and Pevsner's guides to help you choose which to visit.

About Suffolk

These are some images of the countryside and tiny unspoilt vilages around Mill Cottage

In Charles Dickens's days, boys living in Scotland and here in East Anglia would be allowed to leave boarding school a day early because it took so long to get back home to those places.

Even though we are just 60 miles from London, this area was always very inaccessible and remained so until very recent times.

Now the local mainline train journey to London is a mere 45 minutes and a car journey takes about an hour and a half.

But still Suffolk has retained an unusually strong independent rural atmosphere and one of the great joys of the area are the beautiful little hamlets that even locals get lost getting to though the meandering 'spiders web' of tiny lanes and byroads. Many of these villages are wonderfully preserved in their medieval origins, our local village of Lavenham being a fantastic example.

The area is very rich in History from the Saxon treasure of Sutton Hoo and the rebel Queen Bodicea who defeated the Romans, right up to the many expeditions of Settlers leaving for America - in fact the First Governor of Massachusetts came from this tiny hamlet of Edwardstone when I am based at The Old Grove Farm.

The landscape and the Architectural beauty of the area has long inspired Artists to work and move here. The greatest English landscape painter John Constable painted all his famous masterpieces along the Stour which is just 5 miles from The Grove Cottages. His work undoubtedly created this landscape as the quintessential English Landscape, which is one reason why visitors to the area feel so at home.

Flatford Mill where many of Constables most well known works of art such as 'The Haywain' were painted is now a National Trust area devoted to this artist and preserving his memory and the area he made so famous.

The Great Portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough lived in Sudbury which is the closest town to us and it is a real pleasure to visit his home which is now a very interesting museum and exciting showplace for local artists and events, it also has a wonderful print making workshop where courses on all kinds of printmaking are constantly held and very much sought after.

The great artist Sir Alfred Munnings, famous for his portraits of Rural Suffolk Life lived and had his studio close to the river Stour at Dedham and these are now an interesting museum devoted to him and his works of art.

For more information, please visit: my  'What to Do' Web Pages where I have an extensive insiders guide to South Suffolk

Here are a few photos I took around the area  - The seaside is at Aldeburgh which is a totaly unspoilt seaside village, famous for its Arts events and good food - it is about 50 minutes from Mill Cottage.

Kentwell Hall is just 20 minutes away and open to visitors, it is famous for it's Medieval Re-enactments

There are lovely walks around the little lanes and tracks that criss cross the countryside.

There are 2 lovely hamlets close to Mill Cottage, Polstead and Chelsworth.  These are the bluebell walks at Polstead - Hiya Reuben (my grandson)

Please have a look at our Guide to South Suffolk - What to do web pages for more information about this gorgeous area.

Below is a recent article about the Suffolk Coast

Joanna Symons, Telegraph Travel Newspaper January 2nd 2010.

'Popular though the Lake District and West Country are as tourist destinations, they can be rather damp. If you want to reduce the risk of a rainy holiday, statistics show that you should head east.

Suffolk for instance, had only about a third as much rainfall as the Lake District last summer. It also happens to have one of the loveliest stretches of coastline in Britain.

The Met office regional statistics per annum.

                        The Lake District             Suffolk

Rain fall         2300 - 3900mm          600 - 660 mm

Thank you, Bob & Anne, for making us so welcome. Mill Cottage is delightful, we love the tranquility - just what we needed! The badger watching was amazing, well worth the standing, thanks for the loan of the warm gear! Walking and cycling great fun. The cottage is beautifully finished and very comfortable.
