Remember the Lovejoy TV series?

Our pick of the holiday cottages in Essex has to be the Lovejoy Studio. Not only is this cottage in a beautiful, rural location but it also has a great history about it.

The Lovejoy Studio is where scenes from the popular TV series 'Lovejoy' were filmed in this lovely converted coach house and the grounds of Belchamp Hall where it stands.

Description

Sitting in the grounds of Belchamp Hall and surrounded by lovely countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border, The Lovejoy Studio is part of a stable block dating from the 18th century, which has been converted into luxury holiday accommodation. Within just 1.5 hours driving distance from London, The Lovejoy Studio is a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life; a place to unwind, relax and enjoy some tranquility.

The Cottage

  • This is a 5 star GOLD awarded cottage. Belchamp Hall and The Lovejoy Studio is right in the middle of the countryside on the Suffolk/Essex border where filming took place and you can cycle through the pretty lanes and eat lunch in the pubs that featured in the series.

  • The ground floor of the stable block became Lovejoy's workshop in the last two series and there are now two accommodation units: one above the workshop (Lovejoy's), which sleeps two people and one next door (The Lovejoy Studio), which sleeps four.

  • You step into the cottage through a big, glassed door, painted in 'Belchamp Green' and enter into a large, airy room that has the brightness of an artist's studio. The room is open plan with a high ceiling and old beams that give it a lovely atmosphere with a mix of old and new.  Contemporary furniture sits happily in this nice airy space that used to be an old coach house  - hence the big 'front' door and spacious feel.

  • This big room contains a kitchen area with everything you need to cook up a feast and on one side of the room, you can see the walled garden and tennis courts, and on the other side, you look out onto trees and a glimpse of Belchamp Hall. The dining table is generous in size and seats six (ideal if you want to rent both cottages: Lovejoy's and The Lovejoy Studio, which would accommodate six people in total).

  • Next to the dining area, there are two, huge sofas with an extension on each one to put your feet up and watch the fire in the woodburning stove, or just relax with a glass of wine. There is a bookcase full of interesting books on art and travel and a TV with a selection of DVDs, including a boxset of the entire Lovejoy TV series!

  • A door leading off this room takes you upstairs to a landing with 2 bedrooms and the bathroom leading off it.

  • The master bedroom is very large with a luxurious, super kingsize bed and plenty of storage space for your clothes.

  • The second bedroom has an antique 'small double' Sleigh Bed which maybe a bit tight for big people at just 4 foot wide and 6 foot 1 inch long. This bedroom has a nook for hanging your clothing, a chest of drawers and bedside table.

  • There is a very spacious bathroom next to the bedrooms with a lovely stylish bath, two wash basins, toilet and a spacious separate walk-in shower.

  • Unfortunately the owners cannot accept children in this cottage just babes in arms and adults over 18 years old.

  • The Lovejoy Studio is so named, because not only was it used as the film set for the TV series Lovejoy and it has studio-like qualities of being light and spacious, but also because Belchamp Hall is the home of artist Alice Scrutton who is known for her large, sweeping seascapes and whose work features throughout this lovely holiday home.

  • Outside, there is a tennis court for guests' use, large pond and walled garden, where a couple of peacocks roam and show off their splendid plumes. Tennis racquets and balls are provided for you to enjoy a game, as are bikes and a BBQ and there is a small, enclosed garden for your own use where you can sit in private and enjoy your breakfast or enjoy some sunshine over lunch or dinner.

  • There is a separate utility room, shared by both cottages, which has washing machines, a clothes dryer and it's where the tennis racquets are kept.

The Location

  • There are plenty of footpaths round and about the estate and beyond, with woodlands, Belchamp Brook and a lovely mill pond nearby. There's also a pretty, 14th century brick and flint church, with some fascinating medieval wall paintings, just across the road.

  • The country lanes are very quiet and ideal for a cycling trip and The Lovejoy Studio is just a few miles from Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham, Finchingfield and Castle Hedingham.

  • There are plenty of farm shops and good quality pubs and restaurants nearby too - everything you need for an idyllic stay in a beautiful setting.

The Lovejoy Connection

Remember the popular BBC series, which ran from 1986-94, about the 'lovable rogue' and antiques dealer called Lovejoy? Well, Belchamp Hall was a regular feature as the home of Lovejoy's love interest, Lady Jane, and was known in the series as Felsham Hall. Lovejoy is still shown around the world today and has quite an international following. People not only love the characters and stories, but also the places where it was filmed.

Lovejoy Locations

If you are a fan of the Lovejoy TV show and are looking to visit some of the locations locally, here are a few ideas:

  • The Half Moon pub in Belchamp St Paul was featured in quite a few episodes.

  • The Fox Inn, Finchingfield was featured in the 1992 Christmas special (and the village of Finchingfield was featured in two episodes).

  • Hedingham Castle was featured in the 1992 Christmas special as a castle in Prague.

  • Coggeshall was featured in series four and you may recognise the clock tower.

  • Townsford Mill, Halstead is an antiques centre featured in series four.

  • Long Melford was featured many times in the show with the interior of the Bull Hotel and many of the antiques shops.

  • Belchamp Walter church (just across the road from Lovejoy's) was featured in the last episode called “Last Tango in Lavenham”

After renting holiday cottages in many counties over the years, this is definitely the best we have ever stayed in. We are already planning our next trips in the Autumn and Spring to enjoy the area again in different seasons. Our expectations were exceeded. The welcome pack was beyond expectations. The location is superb with freedom to walk around the estate. The owners were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. They have obviously gone to the trouble to think of everything you might need - even a car cover, should the resident peacocks take a liking to your car!

  • Monday, 6th of July, 2015, Doreen, David & Harriet:
