Penny Cottage is a Historic Cottage in England's Best Preserved Medieval Village - This is 5 Star Luxury in a special location.

Built as a Weavers Cottage in the 16 th Century Penny Cottage has been carefully renovated to protect all its historic heritage but offer guests a real 5 Star self catering experience to cherish enhanced by it's beautiful antique furnishings and many luxury features.  The cosy log burner makes this a romantic treat for couples staying in Historic Lavenham

Penny Cottage has many wonderful period features - broad oak floor boards, ancient beamed and arched rooms, old brickwork and listed wood paneling and mullioned windows.

The Cottage is in Shilling Street, a quiet 16th Century residential street just a 100 meters from the main square and where Jane Taylor lived and wrote the famous nursery rhyme “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

The bright sitting room has a cosy log burning stove and leads into the well proportioned kitchen dining area which contains all of the modern conveniences including dishwasher, refrigerator and washing machine, cleverly hidden by attractive hand built fixtures.

You can walk straight out from the kitchen onto a private patio to enjoy a glass of wine as you relax looking out over the lovely mature garden to the Suffolk countryside beyond.

Steps leading down from the patio bring you into the impressve mature garden which is shared with Mint Cottage next door and is also part of our small group of holiday cottages. The garden has some nice quiet places to enjoy a picnic or have some privacy.

The steep stairs winding up into the bedroom give away the age of the building and people with mobility problems should not book this cottage - for the able bodied it is just another bit of the lovely character of Penny Cottage.

The beautiful old bedroom has a high vaulted ceiling with a wealth of ancient oak beams. It has a beautiful antique Jacobean barley-sugar bed with silk tapestry hangings and oriental rugs on the floor. A bright en suite bathroom leads off the bedroom.

There is full central heating throughout the cottage. This cottage also has an ipod/iphone portable speaker, all mod cons here!

This cottage is 5 star rated because of the very high quality of furnishings and equipment, because of this we are unable to offer this lovely cottage to guests with pets or to smokers.

Although the cottage does not benefit from off road parking, parking is allowed on the street right outside.

This is the cosy Woodburning stove                        These beautiful Oak Floor boards are over 500 years old                And this is a very luxurious antique bed

Lavenham contains an excellent French Restaurant rated as one of the best in England called The Great House.

The Market Place which is 100 yards away also features the wonderful Guildhall which is owned by the National Trust and was the backdrop for the 1960's cult film “Witchfinder General”, The Guildhall now houses a fascinating local history Museum including such interesting bits of information such as the local law passed in the 1940's stopping the rich people from Kent buying up the ancient Village houses to transport them there, this happened after a street disappeared !

There are many fine pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, beauty salons, and lovely old fashioned village shops in the village. There is a proper baker, an old fashioned grocer, a butcher and a pharmacy as well as interesting antiques, clothes and gift shops.

Lavenham although really tiny was once England's 13th most prosperous town - in the 16th Century ! Its importance stems from its wool and weaving activities which is attested to by its wonderful historic buildings, especially the Guildhall and Church.

It is a short stroll to the edge of the village and there are marked circular walks one of which will take you down the disused railway line to Long Melford where the TV series Lovejoy was based and is an antique hunters dream.

This is a beautiful and romantic Cottage in a really outstanding historic location offering 5 star quality and luxury.

What a great find! From the warm welcome extended by Maryka to David pulling out all the stops to solve the temporary heating problem, we cannot praise this place highly enough. Absolutely everything we needed, and more (fresh flowers - how many holiday lets go this far!) for a quiet break in the English countryside. This aside from the history and picturesque villages which, in themselves, are more than worth a visit. Even though we were here in the worst winter period for 30 years, we managed to get out and about. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we did including a beautiful Sunday walk round Stoke-by-Nayland, with families tobogganing and great pub (The Crown) to two peaceful days at Minsmere. Perfect!! We hope to return.

Quality accomodation.
